FloWrestler of the Week: Alan Waters, Missouri
FloWrestler of the Week: Alan Waters, Missouri
If anyone had any doubt that Alan Waters was the top dog at 125 pounds, he silenced them all quickly this weekend.
Waters went undefeated with wins over #2-Jesse Delgado, #5-Thomas Gilman and Scotty Parker as the Tigers were crowned National Duals champs. The Southern Scuffle champ wrestled a great match against the returning two-time National Champ. He took Delgado down, collected a pair of backpoints and also racked up over two minutes of riding time.
Against Gilman in the championship things got a bit heated resulting in penalty points and the two needing to be separated. It was all capped off with Waters mocking the Hawkeyes with a bird-like gesture as the referee raised his hand after he defeated Gilman 5-4 in overtime.
All in all, Waters certainly proved that he is the guy to beat at 125. That is what makes him the FloWrestler of the Week presented by Cliff Keen.
Other FloWrestler of the Week Nominees:
Bratke’s pick: Brian Realbuto, Cornell
Didn’t fall for any of the tricks of returning National runner-up Dylan Ness as he downed the top-ranked Gopher 9-3 in Cornell’s win over Minnesota in the quarterfinals of Nationals Duals. He also recorded his second win of the season over returning All-American Mitch Minotti.
Willie’s pick: Jaydin Clayton, Fulton, MO
Became the second undefeated four-time state champion in Missouri history. Clayton pinned his way through the state tournament with four falls to finish his senior season at 57-0.
Vinny’s pick: Tommy Rayhart, Big Spring, PA
Defeated returning PA state champ Jan Johnson in the District 3 qurterfinals, 3-2, to advance to the semis. After shutting out Steven McNeal, 7-0, he edged Francis Duggan, 1-0, in the final to avenge a loss from the sectional tournament the week prior and claim the 195-pound title.
Holmes’ pick: Sammy Sasso, Nazareth, PA
Won his first District 11 title in dominant fashion. The freshman recorded a pair of technical falls and a pair of major decisions including a 13-0 major over returning state place winner Mikey Scheetz of Northampton. Scheetz had beaten the returning state champ, Jake Reigle, in semi's.
CP’s pick: Sean Boyle, UTC
Defeated #5- Thomas Gilman in the opening bout of National Duals. Boyle won an overtime scramble to get the 3-1 win over Gilman.
