COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 11th-ranked Ohio State wrestling team will close out the 2013-14 regular season at 2 p.m. Sunday against No. 16 Virginia Tech. Six seniors – Alex GordonJoe GrandominicoNick HeflinIan PaddockJosh Whitt and Cassandra Prezzia (manager) will be recognized Sunday as they compete and work for the last time in front of the home crowd in St. John Arena.  

 

Last Time Out

After dropping its semifinal match to No. 1 Minnesota, 25-10, the 13th-ranked Ohio State wrestling team answered with a 23-16 victory vs. No. 11 Oklahoma to finish third in the NWCA National Duals at St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio, Feb. 17. Prior to its loss to the Gophers, Ohio State defeated Hofstra, 29-10, in preliminary action before handing Kent State a 32-4 loss in the quarterfinals.

 

Ohio State vs. Virginia Tech

Ohio State leads the all-time series vs. Virginia Tech, 13-1, including wins in the last three meetings. The Buckeyes’ lone setback vs. the Hokies came in 2004, a 29-12 loss in in Blacksburg. A season ago, holding on to an 11-10 lead with four matches remaining, No. 5 Ohio State won four consecutive bouts between 174 pounds and heavyweight to pull out a 23-10 victory at No. 12 Virginia Tech Nov. 16, 2012 at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Va. Trailing only once following the opening match at 125 pounds, the Buckeyes held a narrow 8-7 advantage after the 149-pound bout before clinching their second dual win of the season on senior C.J. Magrum’s 7-4 decision over Derrick Borlie in the 197-pound matchup.

Buckeyes vs. Hokies

A quartet of Buckeyes has wrestled Virginia Tech at least twice in their careers. Logan Stieber, Hunter Stieber and Nick Heflin have perfect 2-0 records vs. the Hokies, while Josh Demas is 1-1. Other Buckeyes who have competed against Virginia Tech include Johnni DiJulius (0-1), Mark Martin (0-1) and Kenny Courts (1-0).

 

Up Next

The Buckeyes will travel to Madison, Wis., for the 2014 Big Ten Championships March 8-9. Redshirt-junior Logan Stieber will seek his third conference title. The past two seasons, Stieber won the league crown at 133 pounds. This year, Stieber will vie for the 141-pound title.
