Jesse Jantzen ’04 and J.P. O’Connor ’10 will forever be linked in Harvard wrestling lore, and once you dive into the numbers, the similarities are almost scary…

#7 Triple Threat:
For the first time in program history, three Harvard wrestlers earned All-America honors at the 2007 NCAA Wrestling Championships; Louis Caputo ’09-10 (7^th, 184 lbs.) (pictured below), Max Meltzer ’06 (8^th, 141 lbs.) and J.P. O’Connor ’10 (5^th, 149 lbs.). The trio led Harvard to a 22^nd-place finish in the tournament with 29 points, the most team points scored in program history.

#8 Title Run:
In the winter of 1924, Harvard captured its first of five straight New England Intercollegiate wrestling titles. Three members of the Crimson, Bernard Goldberg ’26 (115 lbs.), George Karelitz ’24 (145 lbs.) and Carl Stearns ’26 (125 lbs.), would each go on to win an intercollegiate title that season.

#9 Most Outstanding Wrestler:
135-pounder Patrick O. Johnson '33 recorded three technical falls en route to a third-place finish at the 1933 NCAA Wrestling Tournament. Johnson was named Most Outstanding Wrestler for his performance, sharing the honor with Alan Kelley from Oklahoma State. Johnson would later serve as head coach of the Crimson from 1936-41 and coached John C. Harkness ’38 to Harvard’s first NCAA national championship in 1938.

#10 World Class:
Jesse Jantzen ’04 (pictured below) added to his illustrious wrestling resume in 2005 when he became the first Harvard alumnus and only the third American to win a World University Games. Jantzen dominated the competition in Turkey, shutting out his opponents in seven of 10 periods and not losing a single frame en route to the title. His final victory came against Kelazsaev Berding of Russia, 4-0, 2-0.
