No. 9-Tigers Blank Buffalo at Annual Beauty & the Beast

Mizzou won all 10 bouts for the third time this season

COLUMBIA, Mo. – A week after a 28-6 loss at the hands of Oklahoma State, the ninth-ranked Missouri Tigers bounced back Friday night with a 41-0 shutout over the Buffalo Bulls. For the thirdtime this season the Missouri wrestlers swept their opponent, taking all 10bouts by way of two falls, three decisions, and five major decisions on thenight.

At 141 pounds, freshman Lavion Mayes grappled through three periods notching four takedowns and twoescapes before sealing his victory over Buffalo’s Nick Flannery with a fall at 6:37. Mayes’s continued success has recently earned him a spot in the top-20 rankings at 141 pounds, where he’s listed at No. 19.

“Lavion (Mayes) knew it’d be a tough match and he knew he had to be smart against (Nick Flannery). He did a great job and stuck with the game plan, and when the shots were there he blew through them,” said Head Coach Brian Smith following his team’s third shutout of the season.

Freshman Joey Lavallee also won by fall in the 157-pound bout at 3:59. Lavallee defeated the Bull’s Wally Maziarz for his 22nd win this season.

The first major decision came at 149 pounds as No. 1 ranked Drake Houdashelt cruised to his 17th consecutive victory and an 18-5 major decision over Buffalo freshman Ryan Todora. Other major decisions came at 165, 174, 197, and HWT bouts.

Freshmen Barlow McGhee (125), Matt Manley (133), and sophomore Cody Johnston (184) added decisions for the Tigers.

The Tiger’s seventh victory came in front of a crowd of over 3,000 fans at Mizzou Athletics’ annual Beauty and the Beast event. On the adjacent floor, Mizzou Gymnastics also came outvictorious over the Southeast Missouri Redhawks.

The Missouri Tigers have a quick turnaround and will be back in action Saturday, Feb. 8. The squad will be squaring off against MAC conference foe Eastern Michigan for the second time ever, with the Tigers holding a 2-0 advantage all-time.

“In these quick turnarounds like we have this weekend, it’s all about your mindset. Your mindset has to be ‘We won, but now we have to do it again tomorrow’,” said Smith. “Eastern Michigan is a good team with some guys highly ranked in the conference. It’s quick turnarounds like this that prepare you for conference tournaments and the NCAA’s.”

The dual will kickoff at 1:00 pm at the Hearnes Center.
