Purdue's No. 14 Atwood Upsets Iowa's No. 11 Burak

BRADLEY, Ill. - Riding time accumulated in the second period was the difference maker
as 14th-ranked Braden Atwood upset No. 11 Nathan Burak of Iowa, 5-4, Friday night in Bradley-Bourbonnais
High School. The win at 197 pounds was the lone victory for Purdue, now 3-2, 0-2 Big Ten, as the Hawkeyes (7-1, 1-0 Big Ten) won nine weights en route to their first Big Ten dual win of the season, 30-3.
The first three minutes of action saw Atwood and Burak battling for shot opportunities, with the redshirt junior Boilermaker fighting off all of Burak's attempts for a scoreless
session. The Hawkeye got on the board with an escape midway through the second period after Atwood deferred choice to take a 1-0 lead. Atwood used a duckunder for two and rode Burak out for the rest of the period for a 2-1 advantage.
He added to his lead with a quick escape at the start of the third period. With a single-leg shot on the knee, Burak tripped Atwood to get the takedown as the two fell out of bounds
to even the score at 3-3. Atwood then escaped from the Hawkeyes' hold to go up 4-3. After being warned for stalling in the second period, Atwood was penalized for stalling as time ticked away, tying it at 4-4. It was the riding time accumulated by Atwood in
the second period that earned him his 16th win of the season.
The decision over Burak (5-2) is the second in as many dual meetings for Atwood (16-5), posting a 4-1 decision over the Hawkeye in Iowa City on Jan. 6, 2013. With the win he also
improves to 4-4 against ranked opponents this season.
Riding time wasn't only a benefactor for Purdue. Third-ranked Thomas Gilman's 1:46 of ride time plus an escape gave him a 2-0 decision over Camden
Eppert to start the dual with a win for Iowa at 125 pounds. Brandon
Nelsen's third-period reversal closed the gap at 149, but was not enough as he fell to Brody Grothus, 5-3. At 174, Patrick
Kissel held a 3-2 lead heading into the final two minutes, only to have Alex Meyer reverse and ride him to a 5-3 setback.
Big Ten action continues for Purdue, traveling to Ann Arbor to take on No. 19 Michigan at 7 p.m. ET on Jan. 10 and two days later facing top-ranked Penn State at 1 p.m. ET in University
Park.
