Cal Poly to Host North Dakota State for Non-Conference Dual Wrestling Meet Satu

Cal Poly to Host North Dakota State for Non-Conference Dual Meet Saturday Afternoon

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Two months into the 2013-14 wrestling season, Cal Poly finally hosts a dual meet in the Mott Athletics Center on Saturday afternoon.
Third-year head coach Brendan Buckley's Mustangs (2-1) will entertain North Dakota State (2-3) for a non-conference dual starting at 1 p.m.
The two teams have met just once before in a dual meet, with Cal Poly posting a 29-9 victory on Jan. 9, 2010, also in the Mott Athletics Center.
Cal Poly's top wrestler so far this season is sophomore 133-pounder Devon Lotito, ranked No. 20 this week by InterMat with a 13-7 record.
Lotito, the 2013 Pac-12 champion at 133 pounds as a true freshman, placed seventh in the Midlands Championships earlier this week and was third in the Reno Tournament of Champions two weeks ago.
Junior Dominic Kastl, who missed the entire 2012-13 season with a lower back injury after capturing the 2012 Pac-12 title at 165 pounds, sports an 8-2 mark this year while his younger brother, redshirt freshman Blake Kastl, is 13-5 at 149 pounds.
Mustang 285-pounder Spencer Empey is off to a 10-8 start in his first season at Cal Poly while senior 184-pounder Sean Dougherty is 9-7.
North Dakota State has a pair of nationally ranked wrestlers and three matmen who placed at the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill.
The Bison are led by senior 165-pounder Steven Monk, ranked No. 4 by InterMat this week after winning a Midlands title. Monk is 16-1 this year, 114-23 in his collegiate career, placed fourth in the Midlands in both 2011 and 2012 and is a two-time NCAA qualifier.
Bison 174-pounder Hayden Zillmer is 15-4 for the season and ranked No. 16 by InterMat. Zillmer placed third at the Midlands earlier this week.
Placing seventh in the Midlands at 184 pounds was junior Kurtis Julson, raising his record for the season to 9-6.
North Dakota State's pair of dual wins were against Northern Illinois 21-16 and South Dakota State 30-13. The Bison lost to Missouri, Northern Iowa and Iowa State, all ranked in the top 20.
Cal Poly wrestling, presented by Meathead Movers, opened its season with dual wins over Bakersfield and San Francisco State before falling to Cal Baptist 19-18 on Dec. 16.
Cal Poly's other home duals this season are against Boise State on Jan. 12, Menlo on Jan. 18, Oregon State on Jan. 30, South Dakota State and Stanford on Feb. 9 and Arizona State for Homecoming on Feb. 14. The Oregon State dual will be held outdoors in the University Union plaza.
