Oklahoma State Wrestling Takes on No. 2 Minnesota

The Basics

   The No. 5 Oklahoma State  wrestling team (1-1 overall) hosts the nationÂ’s No. 2 team, Minnesota (3-0 overall), in another early-season test in Stillwater, Okla., on Sunday at 2 p.m.

In the Polls

   Oklahoma State enters the dual ranked No. 5 in the USA Today/NWCA/AWN/Division 1 Coaches Poll and No. 4 in the Intermat Rankings. Minnesota is No. 2 in the Coaches Poll and No. 3 in the Intermat Rankings.

   Nine of OSUÂ’s 10 potential starters are ranked among the top 20 in the nation at their respective weight classes in at least one poll, including No. 2 rankings for 174-pound defending national champion Chris Perry and All-Americans Jon Morrison, Alex Dieringer and Tyler Caldwell.

   Minnesota also has nine of its starters ranked in the top 20 at their weight classes. Leading the Golden Gophers are Scott Schiller and Tony Nelson, who both carry the No. 1 ranking at their weight.

 

2013 Recap

   The Oklahoma State wrestling team wrapped up a noteworthy 2012-13 season, producing two individual national champions and five other All-Americans along with a regular season conference title, a Big 12 tournament title and a 20-1 overall dual record.

   At the Big 12 tournament, the Pokes broke a couple of records en route to earning their 14th Big 12 tournament title. The Cowboys shattered the record for most team points scored in the tourney with 118.5 and for the most individual champions with eight.

 

An Oklahoma State Win Would...

• Extend the Cowboys’ lead to 23-13 in the overall series with Minnesota.

• Give the Pokes their fifth straight win against Minnesota in December meetings.

• Boost the Cowboys’ win streak in Stillwater to 10.

 

An Oklahoma State Loss Would...

• Mark the Cowboys’ second consecutive loss to Minnesota.

• Snap the Cowboys’ streak of seven consecutive wins against OU.

• Give the Cowboys their first loss in Stillwater since 2012.

Previous Head-to-Head Matchups

   Four Cowboys have already faced their Minnesota foes at least once in their career. The last meeting between Josh Kindig and Nick Dardanes was  at 141 pounds in 2011. Dardanes took the match, 14-12, in a sudden victory thriller. Chris Perry leads Logan Storely in the overall series, 2-1. The two met up twice last season and split a two-match series. Blake Rosholt faced off against Scott Schiller twice last season and dropped both matches. Austin Marsden was taken out of his redshirt and battled Tony Nelson in the National Duals finals in 2012. He fell to the then-No.4 heavyweight, 8-1.

 

Top-10 Match-Ups

   Several of this weekendÂ’s bouts are between two top-10 wrestlers at their respective weight classes.

   No. 2 Jon Morrison (OSU) is set to take on No. 9 David Thorn in their first meeting. At 149 pounds, No. 5 Josh Kindig (OSU) faces No. 2 Nick Dardanes. Kindig is fresh off a win over last weekÂ’s No. 2 wrestler, Kendric Maple. Chris Perry (No. 2) looks to extend his lead in the series with fifth-ranked Logan Storley to 3-1. No. 9 Blake Rosholt will face top-ranked Scott Schiller at 197 pounds.

   This weekÂ’s featured bout is at 157 pounds, where No. 2 Alex Dieringer will go head-to-head with No. 4 Dylan Ness in their first meeting.

 

Caldwell Gets 100

   Tyler Caldwell earned his 100th career win with his 19-1 technical fall over Curt Maas of Northern Iowa in his first match of the Joe Parisi Open on Nov. 23. He placed first at the tourney and now boasts a career total of 103-25.

He put together a 63-20 record while at OU and just finished a 35-5 campaign as a Cowboy during the 2012-13 season.

 

Perry Pushes For 100

   Stillwater, Okla., native Chris Perry totes a 97-11 career record, putting him just three wins away from becoming the 35th Cowboy wrestler to join the 100-Win Club and the fifth member of his family to earn the honor.

 

Loaded Lineup

   The Cowboys return five All-Americans for the 2013-14 season in Jon Morrison, Alex Dieringer, Tyler Caldwell, Blake Rosholt and 2013 national champion Chris Perry. Of the other five Cowboys in the lineup, four are NCAA qualifiers.              In total, the Oklahoma State lineup combines for one national champion, seven Big 12 champions and eight All-Americans.

 

Cowboy Comebacks

   Josh Kindig and Austin Marsden return to the Cowboy lineup after taking redshirts during the 2012-13 season. Kindig spent two years in the lineup as a true freshman and a sophomore before taking a year off. As a starter, Kindig produced a third-place and runner-up finish at Big 12s and was a two-time NCAA qualifier.

   Marsden was taken from his redshirt late in the 2011-12 season after starting heavyweight Alan Gelogaev suffered a season-ending injury. Marsden went on to finish second at the Big 12 Championships and qualify for NCAAs as a true freshman.

 

Ringing Out the Competition

   Many eyes will be on Alex Dieringer this season after he completed an outstanding freshman campaign in 2013.

   He was named the 2013 Intermat Freshman of the Year and the Amateur Wrestling News Redshirt Freshman of the Year, finishing as a Big 12 Champion and producing a third-place finish at NCAAs to earn All-American status. He finished the season with 23 bonus-point wins, only second to Cowboy standout and two-time NCAA champion Jordan Oliver. Of those bonus-point wins, four came over top-20 opponents.

   Dieringer went 35-3 overall and 18-1 in dual competition. He also owned a perfect 7-0 record over Big 12 competition. Look for big things to come from the Port Washington, Wisc., native.

Signing Day Recap

   In mid-November, John Smith announced the signing of six wrestlers during the 2013 early signing period.

   Headlining the class is No. 1 overall recruit Chance Marsteller of Fawn Grove, Pa. The senior carries a perfect 125-0 record into his senior season. Joining him is three-time Washington state champion and No. 9 overall recruit Chandler Rogers, who moved to Stillwater, Okla., for his senior season.

   The Cowboys scored other nationally ranked recruits in No. 21 Ryan Blees from North Dakota, No. 49 Gary Wayne Harding, an Oklahoma native, and No. 62 Mike Magaldo of New Jersey.

   The final signee for the Pokes was Cedar City, Utah, native Dusty Hone.
