Oklahoma State Wrestling Signs No. 1 Chance Marsteller and Five Others
STILLWATER – John Smith and the Oklahoma State wrestling squad announced today the signing of six wrestlers to National Letters of Intent for the 2014-15 season.
The incoming class is highlighted by four five-star recruits, including Chance Marsteller, the No. 1 overall recruit in the nation, according to Intermat.*
“It’s a great class and great group of athletes we got this year,” Smith said. “It’s going to help us fill those middle weights as Perry and Caldwell graduate this year. I’m fired up this group.”
Marsteller, who verbally committed to Penn State originally, is tabbed as the top-ranked 170 pounder. He carries an astounding 125-0 record into his senior season at Kennard-Dale High School in Fawn Grove, Pa. During his junior season, Marsteller ended all but one of his bouts with bonus points. Marsteller is a three-time state champion and will wrestle for the Pokes at either 165 or 174 pounds. The senior is following in the footsteps of fellow Pennsylvanians and national champions Teague Moore, Coleman Scott and Jordan Oliver.
Marsteller is a three-time Fargo champion, earning freestyle titles in 2010 and 2011 and a Greco-Roman title in 2011. In 2012, he was crowned the FILA Cadet Nationals champion. That same year, he represented the US on the Cadet World Team and competed at the Cadet World Championships in Azerbaijan.
Joining him is Stillwater High School wrestler No. 9 Chandler Rogers, who is originally from Spokane, Wash. Rogers, a 170-pound wrestler, is a three-time Washington state champion. Rogers is also a three-time Greco-Roman national champ from 2011-13. He took first at the FILA Cadet in 2012. That same year, he was named Greco Wrestler of the Year. The five-star recruit’s brother, Jordan, wrestles for the Pokes at 184 pounds.
“I like that we picked up Rogers,” Smith said. “Chandler is a winner, and I like having brothers in the room. They tend to push each other.”
The nation’s No. 21 overall wrestler also committed to Oklahoma State. Ryan Blees is a native of Bismark, N.D., and wrestles at 157 pounds. Blees is a three-time North Dakota state champ and five-time North Dakota state placer. In 2013, he was the Fargo Freestyle champ at 152 pounds. The five-time Fargo All-American gathered several runner-up finishes at national tournaments.
“Ryan Blees is a solid individual from North Dakota, and he’ll most likely be a 157 pounder for us,” Smith said.
Another Oklahoma wrestler is welcomed to the Cowboy family in Gary Wayne Harding from Collinsville, Okla. The 132 pounder is a three-time Oklahoma state champion and ranked 45th in the nation. He was also the 2011 Cadet Freestyle runner-up.
“I love Gary Wayne Harding’s lifestyle. He lives wrestling,” said Smith.
Rounding out the Cowboys’ nationally ranked recruits is No. 62 Mike Magaldo, a senior at Watchung Hills High School in New Jersey. Malgaldo is a New Jersey state champion and a two-time New Jersey state finalist.
The final signee for the Pokes is Dusty Hone of Cedar City, Utah. The three-time state champion looks to be only the 28th four-time state champion the state has seen. Hone has also picked up four first-place wins at major tournaments from 2010-2013.
