Wrestling Named One of Top-30 All-Academic Teams, Honors All-Academic Duo
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State wrestling team
earned the No. 21 spot on the National Wrestling Coaches AssociationÂ’s Top 30 All-Academic teams for the 2012-13 season with a team GPA of 3.071. Grabbing individual academic honors were Cowboy wrestlers Chris Perry
and Chris Chionuma, who were named to the Division I All-Academic team.
Perry and Chionuma are two of seven athletes representing the Big 12. Perry, one of only four national champions to make
the team, picked up the recognition for the second-consecutive year. The honor was the first for Chionuma.
In a system used to determine team GPA that included
12 student-athletes from each program, the Cowboys were the only Big 12 team to earn a spot in the Top 30. This is also the second-consecutive honor for John SmithÂ’s squad.
“The NWCA All-Academic Team and Individual Team
is one of the best acknowledgements that we can give to our coaches and athletes at the end of a physically grueling season,” said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. “These young men have proven that they are not only talented competitors but are leaders
in the classroom as well. The NWCA Board of Directors and staff look forward to watching these student-athletes continue their success at the collegiate level and eventually as the leaders of the future once they earn their college degrees.”
