Illinois Doubles Up The Hard Way

USA Wrestling didn't make it easy on them, but the squad from the Land of Lincoln got the job done anyway.

Imagine having to wrestle the second best team not once, not twice, but four times in a single competition.

That's what Illinois did as Pennsylvania was in their Pool for both the Greco Roman and Freestyle brackets at Cadet National Duals this weekend in Orlando, FL.

Illinois and PA have become very familiar with each other the last two years. In addition to their four meetings this year, they wrestled for the Freestyle Cadet Duals title in the finals last year, with PA coming out on top. So not only was going 4-0 against them this year the path to the title, it was also a little bit of sweet revenge.

With double titles this weekend, Illinois has now claimed 9 National Duals titles at the Cadet level since 2009.

PA had life in the final dual. They opened up with a Tech Fall at heavyweight, which reversed the outcome of that bout from their Pool match. And the Keystoners would go on to hold a 27-12 lead at the halfway point.

But the Illinois hammers were coming. Nationally ranked Isaiah White and Larry Early put up 9 quick points.

PA's last gasp occurred at 170lbs with four bouts to go and the dual tied at 28. PA's Josh Collelo was seemingly on his way to a lopsided victory leading 5-0 when he got thrown to his back and pinned by Illinois' Riley DeMoss, which essentially shut the door on an upset bid.
