DES MOINES, Iowa – After one full day of Championship wrestling at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa, all 10 Tigers remain alive in this year’s field. Friday morning’s Quarterfinals will feature four Missouri Tigers, with the rest down to their last life in the wrestleback bracket of their individual weight classes. The Tigers finish the first day of the 2013 NCAA Championships in sixth place with 14.5 points. Defending champion Penn State leads the tournament with 32.5.

 

Missouri is one of three programs with all 10 grapplers still competing after the first day. Minnesota and Oklahoma State also have all 10 remaining, with seven of OklahomaÂ’s 10 still in the championship bracket. The first-place Nittany Lions have nine still alive, with six advancing to the quarterfinals.

 

No. 1 Alan Waters, No. 6 Nathan McCormick, Drake Houdashelt, and No. 1 Dom Bradley each won both of their matches Thursday and have advanced to the Quarterfinal round. Waters and Bradley protected their top-spots in the 125 and HWT brackets, while Houdashelt gained some respect after stunning No. 11 Andrew Alton of Penn State and No. 6 Dylan Ness of Minnesota. These four grapplers are the same four that claimed individual MAC titles back on March 10 in Buffalo, N.Y.

 

Last season in St. Louis, Brent Haynes was the only Tiger to remain undefeated after day one and solidify a spot in the quarters.

 

In the secondround at 149 pounds, Ness capitalized first and held a quick 2-0 lead over Houdashelt. The match started to pick up a little intensity when the Tiger-sophomore had Ness in a tight cradle. Houdashelt shifted Ness onto his back for a brief second, but the officials didnÂ’t reward points. With 12 ticks remaining in the third, Houdashelt secured a takedown and the victory. He added a ride time point a 1:07 advantage, and secured his spot in tomorrowÂ’s quarterfinal round against Kevin Tao of American University.

 

MinnesotaÂ’s Ness was last yearÂ’s runner up at 149 pounds.

 

At 125 pounds, No. 1 Alan Waters defeated Sean Boyle of Michigan to advance to the All-American round. Boyle kept it scoreless through two periods, but a reversal at 1:11 in the third period gave Waters a lead. Waters took the contest 4-2 and will now face VirginiaÂ’s No. 8 Matthew Snyder tomorrow. Should he win his matchup versus Snyder Friday morning, it will be his 100^th career-win as a Tiger in just his third season as a starter. Senior Brent Haynes (113) and redshirt senior Dom Bradley (103) have also reached that milestone this season. Waters fell just short of becoming an All-American last season after losing to Jesse Delgado of Illinois, 5-2.

 

The sixth-seeded McCormick faces a tough matchup at 133 pounds Friday morning against WisconsinÂ’s No. 3 Tyler Graff after his two wins. MizzouÂ’s senior captain came out in ThursdayÂ’s night session and gave Mizzou a rare win with bonus points. McCormick defeated Dane Harlowe of Boston University 11-1 after posting seven points in the first three minutes. McCormick kicked off the day with a 3-0 decision over Erik Spjut of Virginia Tech.

 

No. 1 Dom Bradley rounds out the group of four Tigers to make the quarterfinal round. Bradleytook care of business against Matthew Gibson of Iowa State. Bradley held a 2-1 lead over Gibson and then added an escape and a ride time point to advance through the bracket. The redshirt senior is eyeing his second All-American honor after taking third in 2011.

 

The tournament resumes Friday morning at 10 a.m. CT with the Quarterfinals on Mats 3-8 and the wrestlebacks on Mats 1, 2, 7 and 8. The Quarterfinals will be broadcasted live on ESPN3.com. The winners will advance to the Semifinal round Friday night.
