How often do things really live up to the hype?

When the revealed the Dapper Dan line-ups, most thought it would be tight. What we didn't know is that it would go down to the wire and that we'd have a surprise hero.

From years of watching the Team USA vs. Team PA at the Dapper Dan, we know this: just about anything can happen. And though I said Zach Beard vs. Cody Wiercioch was my favorite bout of the night in Whiteboard Wars, I didn’t exactly expect what we saw Sunday night in the 39th edition of The Classic.

Beard had enough pressure; he came in to the dual as the #2 ranked wrestler at 170lbs on FLO, and set to face #1-Cody Wiercioch, who saw his legend grow exponentially after his bout with Chance Marsteller in the Powerade finals. What’s more is that Beard, who’d fly in from Tuttle, Oklahoma, would have to wrestle Wiercioch in his neck of the woods (Western Pa), and in what will be Wiercioch home gym when he matriculates to the University of Pittsburgh next year.

And, oh yeah, they scheduled 170 as the last bout of the dual.

As if that wasn’t pressure enough, the sake of the U.S. victor was a burden placed on Beard. When Zain Retherford rode out the final seconds in a win over Anthony Ashnault, team PA had a final shot with Wiercioch on deck as the score moved to 19-18.

All the PA fans thought it was in the bag. But they forgot to tell Beard, who threw Wiercioch by twice in the first period for a quick 4-1 lead that he would never relinquish, giving Team USA it’s second straight win with a 22-18 final score.

145: #2-Ben Whitford, MI dec. #3-Mikey Racciato, 7-3
Bout Notes: Whitford looked great going for move to move and putting scoring attempts on top of each other.

Team Score: USA 3-0

113: #13-Zach Fuentes dec. #5-Paul Mascarenas, NM, 3-2
Bout Notes: Fuentes scored a first period takedown on a low ankle shot on the edge. Mascarenas had trouble getting through his defense thereafter.

Team Score: Tied 3-3

120: #1-Nathan Tomasello, OH dec. #3-Darian Cruz, 3-2
Bout Notes: Darian was able to work from distance early and had his scoring chances, but when Tomasello starting moving forward it drew a stall. Cruz immediately forced an off-balance shot that got countered. In the waning moments, Cruz was close to a takedown as he nearly had a cradle locked up.

Team Score: USA 6-3

HWT: #6-Aaron Bradley dec. #1-Brooks Black, 3-1 OT
Bout Notes: In a rematch from an OT Beast final, the bout featured only escapes until Bradley hit a sweet low single in overtime.

Team Score: Tied 6-6

160: #3-Isaiah Martinez, CA md. #9-Cody Law, 20-8
Bout Notes: Martinez overwhelmed Law with both finesse and grit. He looked great, transition to second shots when his first was stopped.

Team Score: USA 10-6

182: #2-Domenic Abounader, OH dec. #1-Eric Morris, 1-0
Bout Notes: A rather uneventful match. The only point was a second period Abounader escape, and scoring chance from neutral were rare.

Team Score: USA 13-6

132: #3-Dean Heil, OH dec. #4-Ryan Diehl, 6-1
Bout Notes: The bout was settled early when Heil got in on a deep shot. Diehl tried to pass the leg and Heil adjusted, got the takedown, and went right into a turk for a 5-pt. play.

Team Score: USA 16-6

220: #1-Ryan Solomon dec. #2-Frank Mattiace, 2-1 OT
Bout Notes: Mattiace had a several scoring opportunities in but couldn’t quite finish. He was hit with one stalling in regulation and another riding in OT. Solomon rode out his portion of overtime for the win. Watch the match. It was a lot more entertaining than the score sounds. Fun bout.

Team Score: USA 16-9

152: #7-Austin Mathews dec. #1-Jake Short, MN, 8-2
Bout Notes: Mathews hit a shin whizzer for a 5-pt play in the first that paved the way.

Team Score: USA 16-12

126: #1-Joey Dance, VA dec. #3-Connor Schram, 2-1 OT
Bout Notes: Schram stayed in great position and Dance couldn’t get his offense going. In fact, it was Schram who had two or three deep shots, though he didn’t finish quick enough on the savvy Dance, who showed his great ability to mat return in the ride-out portion.

Team Score: USA 19-12; PA would have to sweep the final three bouts for the win.

195: #4-Jake Hart dec. #10-Broc Berge, MN, 3-2
Bout Notes: Hart rode the entire 2nd period out on Berge. Trailing 1-0 late, Berge put together a series of shot on top of shot and got his 2. Incredible wrestling.
After going out of bounds, there were :13 left on the clock. Hart granbied twice and got the reversal at the buzzer.

Team Score: USA 19-15; Hart kept PA’s hope alive.

138: #1-Zain Retherford dec. #3-Anthony Ashnault, NJ, 2-1
Bout Notes: Neither of the two familiar foes were particularly close to scoring on their feet. It was evident in the second period that Retherford had designs to ride. Ashnault eventually got out and took a 1-0 lead to the 3rd period.
Ashnault rode for quite a while before he kind of got out of position and gave up the reversal. Retherford put in the boots and had Ash in a crab ride for twenty tense seconds where Ash was headhunting and Zain was in and out of trouble. With about :06 left, Retherford regained position and broke Ash down.

Team Score: USA 19-18; last bout decides it.

170: #2-Zach Beard, OK dec. #1-Cody Wiercioch, 7-3
Bout Notes: Beard threw a Wiercioch double by for the first takedown about :30 into the bout. In what looked like instant replay, he score the same way near the 1:00 mark.
He added a third takedown on a straight single leg in the second.

Team Score: Beard saved the day for USA, 22-18
