Studs Unscathed on Day I in PA

With the amount of burgeoning stars and depth in PA, and with the tournament being unseeded, there are often jaw dropping upsets in the first round of the three-day state tournament in the Keystone State. But outside of minor surprises, things went rather according to schedule.

Grim Grimaldi (Liberty, 120 AAA), who was 3rd last year after a single 3-2 loss to Connor Schram, went 0-2 on Thursday. But that was about it.

The most exciting bout came at the loaded 113 AAA bracket where Flonationals and Fargo Runner Up, Scotty Parker (Pennridge) beat #20-Dom Forys (N. Allegheny), 10-7.

Don't expect the script to stay that clean on Friday, however, as the talent converges. With 45 nationally ranked wrestlers, the most of any state in the country, there's sure to be a great deal of tight bouts and drama.

On the team side, BECA, who qualified a whopping 12 wrestlers to Hershey, leads the AA field with 20.5 pts. The Golden Hawks have 5 left in the championship side, with 5 more still in consolations. Their 182lber, Jose Ortiz, a King of the Mountain Champ this year, failed to make weight.

Benton is second in AA with 14pts. All five Tigers that qualified won their first bout, including the #1-ranked Zain Retherford.

In AAA, Parkland has the early edge with 17pts. The Trojans have 5 left on the front side and one in wrestlebacks. Top ranked Canon MacMillan and Central Dauphin are tied for 2nd with 14.5pts. Each have 4 left in title contention and 1 in wrestlebacks.

The action will be hot and heavy tomorrow. The AAA Quarterfinals are especially tasty, and the AA Semifinals are tomorrow evening.
