Pac-12 Conference Awarded 21 Slots for NCAA Wrestling Championships

Heavyweight has the most among any weight class with four spots, while 125, 141 and 165 lbs., each are awarded a sole position

INDIANAPOLIS – A total of 21 wrestlers from six different Pac-12 schools will get the chance to go to Des Moines, Iowa for the NCAA Championships later this month. The announcement was made by the NCAA on Thursday as a total of 290 allotments were awarded to 10 different conferences.

The Pac-12 was one of six conferences with at least 20 allocations, with the Big Ten claiming the most at 74, followed by the EIWA with 45, the ACC and MAC who both have 30 and the Eastern Wrestling League with 23.

Among the Pac-12 allotments, heavyweight is the head of the class with four spots, followed by 174 and 184 lbs., with three. Two is the number held by four weight classes including 133 lbs., 149, 157 and 197 lbs. 125 lbs., 141 and 165 lbs., each have a single allotment for NCAA’s.

Each wrestler was measured on the following: Division I winning percentage at the weight class; rating percentage index (RPI); and coaches ranking.  For each wrestler that reached the threshold in at least two of the three categories, his qualifying tournament was awarded a qualifying spot in that weight class.  NCAA tournament spots for each qualifying event will be awarded at the tournament based solely on place-finish.

After all of the qualifying events have concluded, the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee will meet in-person to select the remaining 40 at-large qualifiers, which will be announced on March 13. All weight classes will consist of 33 wrestlers.

The at-large selections will be made based on the following criteria: head-to-head competition; qualifying event placement; quality wins; results against common opponents; winning percentage; RPI; coaches ranking and the number of matches contested at that weight class.

Oregon State currently has six team members with NCAA Championship experience including Mike Mangrum (141 lbs.) 2010, 2011, 2012, Taylor Meeks (197 lbs.) 2012, RJ Pena (157 lbs.) 2010, 2012, Pat Rollins (125 lbs.) 2012, Scott Sakaguchi (149 lbs.) 2011, 2012 and Ty Vinson (184 lbs.) 2012.

Last year Jim Zalesky’s squad took all half dozen wrestlers to St. Louis, where the Beavers finished 10th overall as a team. The 2013 NCAA Championships will take place March 21-13 inside Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines with Iowa State acting as the host school.
