Storley Earns Final Big Ten Wrestler of the Week Award

Sophomore posted wins over second- and third-ranked grapplers at National Duals

 

Sophomore Logan Storley has been named the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week in the final conference award of the 2012-13 competitive season. The honor is the first of StorleyÂ’s Gopher career.

 

The 174-pound, No. 1 wrestler was instrumental in MinnesotaÂ’s successful run through the 2013 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Dual Meet Championship this past weekend. Storley posted three dual wins over his opponents which included the nationÂ’s second- and third-ranked wrestlers.

 

In MinnesotaÂ’s Friday quarterfinal dual against Virginia Tech, Storley tallied an 8-2 decision over Austin Gabel to help his team to a 28-8 win over the Hokies. The next day he started his impressive run with a 3-1 decision over No. 3 Mike Evans, beating the Hawkeye for the second time this season. Minnesota would claim the 22-15 upset to earn a place in the championship.

 

Storley proved even more impressive in the finals against No. 2 Chris Perry. In an overtime bout, Storley delivered a rare defensive pin at the 8:20 mark to cement his place as the No. 1 wrestler in his weight class. With his help, Minnesota cruised to a 28-9 win over the previously unbeaten Cowboys and the National Duals title.

 

The last Minnesota Wrestler of the Week was Scott Schiller, who earned the award earlier this season on Jan. 22.
