COLUMBUS, Ohio – The fifth-ranked Ohio State wrestling team will return to action this weekend when it competes in the 2013 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals at Williams Arena in Minneapolis, Minn. In the bracket, released Tuesday, the Scarlet and Gray, the fourth seed, will face No. 5 seed Missouri in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. ET.

The Buckeyes and Tigers are two of eight teams that will compete in the event as they are joined by host and No. 3 seed Minnesota, No. 7 Cornell, No. 8 Illinois, No. 2 Iowa, No. 1 Oklahoma State and No. 6 Virginia Tech.

Stat Leaders

Sophomore Hunter Stieber paces the Buckeyes in wins with 26. Stieber, who has amassed a 13-0 dual record, including an 8-0 mark in the Big Ten, also leads Ohio State in major decisions with 10. Hunter’s older brother and redshirt sophomore, Logan Stieber, owns the team lead in falls with 10, as well as technical falls with five. Senior Nikko Triggas is second on the team in falls with nine and freshman Kenny Courts is just one technical fall shy of a tie for the team lead with four. Redshirt junior Nick Heflin (6-2) and sophomore Cam Tessari (6-1) collected six Big Ten wins this season, second behind Hunter’s team best eight victories.

Stieber Fever

Logan and Hunter Stieber remain undefeated on the season with 18-0 and 26-0 records, respectively. After missing five consecutive matches in January, Logan Stieber returned to action vs. No. 6 Illinois Feb. 1 in Oak Harbor, Ohio, and pinned No. 8 Daryl Thomas in 2:04. Ninety-four percent of Logan Stieber’s wins in 2012-13 have been bonus point victories. With an 18-0 record, 10 wins have been pins, five technical falls and two major decisions. Hunter Stieber’s 26 victories is a team best and his 10 major decisions paces the squad.

Close Call

Redshirt junior Nick Heflin has won five consecutive matches dating back to Jan. 18. Two of those wins have come via 3-2 decisions – vs. No. 10 Dan Yates of Michigan Feb. 8 and vs. No. 5 Matt Brown of Penn State Feb. 10. Additionally, Heflin scored a 3-1 sudden victory win vs. Illinois’ Jordan Blanton Feb. 1, For the season, Heflin has wrestled in four overtime matches has a 3-1 record in those contests.

On a Roll

Sophomore Cam Tessari has won six of his last seven matches, including victories vs. conference opponents from Iowa, Northwestern, Minnesota, Indiana and Wisconsin. Most recently, Tessari scored an upset victory vs. No. 7 Andrew Alton of Penn State (Feb. 10), 3-1, to help the Buckeyes take a 15-4 lead on the No. 3 team in the country.

NCAA Panel Rankings and RPI

In the second of three NCAA Coaches’ Panel Rankings released Feb. 14, nine Buckeyes are ranked in the Top 33 of their respective weight class, including No. 1 Logan Stieber (133 pounds).

That’s a Wrap

The Big Ten season concluded the weekend of Feb. 8 and Ohio State finished the regular season in fourth place. With their 5-3 conference record, the Buckeyes finished behind champion Iowa (8-0) and Penn State (7-1) and Minnesota (7-1).

Last Time Out

A record-breaking crowd of 6,518 fans in St. John Arena watched No. 5 Ohio State give third-ranked Penn State a highly contested match on senior day, but in the end the Buckeyes fell to the Nittany Lions, 29-18, Feb. 10. With the loss, Ohio State dropped to 11-3 overall and concluded the Big Ten regular season 5-3.

Prior to the match, five seniors – Peter Capone, C.J. Magrum, Nikko Triggas and team managers Victor Puskas and Steve Ruthen – were recognized as the Buckeyes competed for the final time in St. John Arena in 2012-13.

2012 National Duals

Competing in the 2012 Stillwater Regional of the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals, Ohio State won back-to-back matches vs. Boise State (26-9) and Nebraska (21-18) in its opening contests before falling to No. 1 Oklahoma State, 25-6, in the regional final. Against the Cowboys, the Scarlet and Gray received wins from a pair of freshmen in No. 5 Hunter Stieber and No. 20 Josh Demas. Stieber downed Josh Kindig, 7-6, at 133 pounds, while Demas upset No. 11 Albert White, 3-2, at 157 pounds.

Up Next

Ohio State will begin postseason action at the Big Ten championships March 9-10 in Champaign, Ill. Hosted by the University of Illinois, the 2013 edition of the championships will take place in Assembly Hall.
