Beavers Pull Top 10 Rankings in Wrestling InsiderÂ’s Dual Team and Tournament Power Indexes

OSU ranked eighth in WINÂ’s two polls/indexes, while Beavers garner an additional three national rankings in weekly polls

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State wrestling team, fresh off their split in regional National Duals competition have some brand new rankings next to their name, thanks to Wrestling Insider News Magazine who tabbed the Beavers as a top 10 team in both its Dual Team and Tournament Power Indexes.

OSU, who boasts an 11-4 overall dual record and a 5-1 Pac-12 mark is listed as the eighth best team in WINÂ’s Tournament Power Index (TPI). The Beavers, who were awarded 42.5 points are tied with Central Michigan (16-3) for eighth and fall behind Cornell (7), Ohio State (6), Missouri (5), Minnesota (4), Oklahoma State (3), Iowa (2) and top ranked Penn State in the index. OSU has already squared off against two of the top seven teams in the TPI, beating Cornell 23-20 in January, but falling to the Golden Gophers 21-18, last December. The Tournament Power Index gives teams points for how many ranked wrestlers they have in each individual weight class and tries to best predict who will score the most points at the NCAA Championships (March 21-23) in Des Moines, Iowa. OSU currently has five ranked wrestlers in the top 10 of their individual weight class according to WINÂ’s latest poll.

Switching gears to WINÂ’s Team Dual Rankings, the Beavers also find themselves in the No. 8 slot but this time in sole possession of that standing. Oregon State falls just behind No. 7 Virginia Tech who they lost to in National Duals competition last weekend (20-15), but just ahead of No. 9 Cornell, who they already defeated this season. Ohio State (5), Minnesota (4), Penn State (3), Iowa (2) and Oklahoma State (1) round out the top five of the poll.

In other weekly national polls, Jim ZaleskyÂ’s squad finds themselves in the Top 10 in additional two. The Beavers are ranked as the eighth best team in the country according to the Intermat and The Open MatÂ’s latest poll. They are slotted at No. 11 by D1 College Wrestling.

As a unit OSU boasts a total of six nationally ranked wrestlers among those three polls, the highest of which is 141 pounder Mike Mangrum who is ranked third by The Open Mat. Mangrum is listed at No. 4 by Intermat and D1, and so is heavyweight Chad Hanke, who also pulled a No. 4 spot by TOM.

Oregon State next takes to the mats Sunday, March 2 as it will compete at the Pac-12 Championships in Tempe, Ariz. hosted by Arizona State.
