Brute Wrestlers of The Week: A Pair of Hawks
Willie Saylor, Editor
Throughout the season, Brute will bring you its National Wrestler of The Week. Wrestlers can be from any age level and will be selected based on their performances from the previous week only.
This week’s honors go to Derek St. John (157) and Mike Evans (174) of the Iowa Hawkeyes. The duo won two pivotal bouts in the most anticipated dual of the year against Penn State.
St. John, who was an NCAA Runner-Up last year, beat NCAA 3rd place finisher, Dylan Alton, with a counter takedown inside of the last minute of the bout.
Similarly, Evans used a late counter to beat the 7th-ranked Matt Brown.
Both were gritty performances in pressure situations critical to the Hawks’ 22-16 win at home over the two-time defending National Champion Lions.
Other Candidates:
Todd Porter, Missouri - earned a major decision over OK State’s #1-Chris Perry.
Nico Megaludis, Penn State - After losing an overtime decision to #1-Matt McDonough (Iowa), Megaludis rallied to pin All American Jesse Delgado (Illinois).
Kyven Gadson, Iowa State - improved to 7-2 against ranked opponents this year with a 3-1 win over #9-Blake Rosholt of OK State.
