COLUMBUS, Ohio – As the Big Ten Conference schedule begins to wind down, No. 5 Ohio State will host No. 6 Illinois at 7 p.m. Friday in Oak Harbor, Ohio, in hopes of improving on its 9-2 overall record and 3-2 league ledger. The Illini enter the match with an overall mark of 6-2, including a Big Ten record of 2-2.

 

In the conference, the Scarlet and Gray have earned a trio of wins vs. Northwestern (33-6), Indiana (36-3) and No. 19 Wisconsin (29-10). The Buckeyes have dropped decisions to No. 5 Iowa (22-9) and No. 3 Minnesota (25-9)  

 

On the Rise

Senior Nikko Triggas recorded his eighth and ninth falls of the season, a team best, two weeks ago at Indiana and vs. Wisconsin. For his career, Triggas, a native of Moraga, Calif., has 46 falls, which ranks him third all-time at Ohio State. Triggas is one fall shy of a tie for second place in the Buckeye records book, while he also needs four more pins to tie Ohio State all-time leader Don Moxley. Moxley, a letterwinner from 1983-85, amassed 50 falls during his career.

 

Most Dominant

The NCAA’s first release of the Most Dominant Wrestler Awards and second round of standings for the most falls and technical falls was announced Thursday, Jan. 24. Redshirt sophomore Logan Stieber leads the field across all divisions (Division I, II, III) for Most Dominant Wrestler. The Buckeye 133-pounder has accumulated 5.5714 points. In second place for Division I is Andrew Alton of Penn State (149 pounds), who has accrued 5.0667 points. Stieber also is in sixth place in Division I Fall Leaders with eight. Teammate and senior Nikko Triggas is ranked fourth with his nine-fall total. 

 

Stats Leaders

Sophomore Hunter Stieber leads Buckeye varsity wrestlers with 23 wins on the season. Stieber, who boasts a 23-0 record, including a 10-0 dual mark and 5-0 ledger in the Big Ten, also leads the Scarlet and Gray in major decisions with eight. A pair of Buckeyes in Kenny Courts and Logan Stieber pace Ohio State in technical falls with four each. With his nine falls, Nikko Triggas owns the team lead. 

 

“Shorty” Hitchcock Memorial Tournament

Following his 6-4 victory vs. Lucas Sheridan of Indiana Jan. 20, senior C.J. Magrum won the 184-pound title at the “Shorty” Hitchcock Memorial Tournament Jan. 20. Magrum won four matches en route to the title to improve to 10-2 overall.  

 

Start of it All    

C.J. Magrum and Drew Stone are natives of Oak Harbor, Ohio, and attended Oak Harbor High School. Magrum is a senior for the Buckeyes and Stone is a redshirt sophomore. Additionally, former Buckeye letterwinners J.D. Bergman (2004-08) and Wes Bergman (2007-09) are graduates of Oak Harbor High School. A three-time All-American, J.D. is training for a spot at the 2016 Olympics after placing third at the 2012 Olympic Trials.

 

Flashback

Ohio State posted a pair of wins Jan. 18 and Jan. 20 when it defeated Indiana, 36-3, and No. 19 Wisconsin, 29-10, respectively. The Buckeyes won 16 of their 20 bouts vs. the Hoosiers and Badgers combined. In all, the Scarlet and Gray recorded six bonus point victories, including pins by Hunter Stieber and Nikko Triggas (two), a pair of technical falls by Kenny Courts and Stieber and a major decision by Cam Tessari.

 

National Duals

Earning an automatic bid to the finals of the 2013 NWCA/Cliff Keen “Mat Mayhem” National Duals, Ohio State will travel to Minneapolis, Minn., for the event, which will take place Feb. 22-23 in Williams Arena. Action is set to begin at 6 p.m. and the University of Minnesota will serve as hosts.  

 

Up Next

The Buckeyes will conclude their Big Ten schedule with a pair of matches the weekend of Feb. 8. Live on BTN, Ohio State will wrestle No. 17 Michigan in Ann Arbor, Feb. 8 before returning to Columbus to host No. 1 Penn State at 4 p.m. Feb. 10 in St. John Arena on Senior Day.
