No. 9/10/12 OSU Wrestlers Handle Stanford 32-6, at Gill Coliseum

 

Beavers post victories in eight of 10 weight classes for the 26-point victory

 

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Highlighted by Scott Sakaguchi’s pin in the 149 lb. bout, the No. 9/10/12 Oregon State wrestling team cruised to its third straight victory Saturday night, with a 32-6 win over Stanford inside Gill Coliseum. Sakaguchi’s pin came at the 4:46 mark in the match and propelled OSU to a 15-3 lead en-route to its 26 point victory.

 

As a group, the Beavers saw wins in eight of their 10 weight classes and put up 32 points on the board for the second time in the last three meets. With the win, head coach Jim Zalesky’s squad moved to 5-3 on the year and 2-1 in Pac-12 competition, while the Cardinal dropped to 4-11 overall and 0-2 within the conference.

 

Following Stanford’s victory in the 125 lb. match to lead off competition, OSU reeled off 19 unanswered points, taking a 19-3 lead after wins from Drew Van Anrooy (133 lbs.), Mike Mangrum (141 lbs.) via forfeit, Sakaguchi and 157 pounder RJ Pena with a 15-5 major decision over the Cardinal’s Kyle Meyer.

 

The ‘Beavs would allow their conference foes just one more victory on the night before closing out the Cardinal with another scoring stretch, this time a dozen straight points. During the streak, Oregon State saw another major decision, now from Taylor Meeks in the 197 lb. bout, whom handily defeated Michael Sojka (17-3).

Wins from Austin Morehead (174 lbs.), Brian Engdahl  (184 lbs.) and Chad Hanke, who earned his ninth straight in the heavyweight match-up secured OSU’s eighth straight victory over the wrestlers from Stanford, dating back to 2006. The Beavers have now defeated the Cardinal 36 out of 38 times since the schools’ first meeting in 1955.

 

OSU is now two meets over the .500 mark for the first time all-season and has picked up its first home victory of the year, after missing on opportunities in its first two attempts.

With Stanford now in its rearview mirror, Oregon State focuses its attention on Lehigh and Cornell, who they will take on in back-to-back dual meets this coming Saturday, Jan. 26 in Bethlehem, Pa. and then on Sunday, Jan. 27 in Ithaca, N.Y. Both meets take place at 11 a.m. Pacific Time, 2 p.m. Eastern for those making the trip.

--With his FFT victory, Mike Mangrum moved into sole possession of eighth place on the all-time OSU program wins list with 123, he moves past Dick Knorr (1976-79), who has tonight’s honorary captain… Next up is Greg Strobel (1971-74 /190 lbs.) with 123
--Brian Engdahl earned his first collegiate dual victory, he is now 1-4 all-time in dual competition
--The Beavers boast a total of four wrestlers with three or more wins in a row, including Scott Sakaguchi and Drew Van Anrooy with three, RJ Pena (4), Mike Mangrum (8) and Chad Hanke who is tops with nine-in-a-row

“(RJ) Pena wrestled well and got a lot of takedowns. I thought (Taylor) Meeks did a great job of pressure wrestling and scoring a lot of takedowns. (Scott) Sakaguchi wrestled great and I think (Drew) Van Anrooy wrestled a good match, so those guys kind of stood out and are making progress.”

On his team’s progression so far this season…
“I think we are making progress and I think five of our weights are pretty strong. Some of the other guys are coming along, now we’ve got to get a 125 pounder going, but besides that I think we are making progress.”

“I felt pretty good with my shots. I kept attacking the whole time and got some good takedowns. I just kept coming and got the major (decision), that is what I was most looking forward to so I am happy with that result.”

On his team getting its first home win of the season…
“Feels good, we finally did it. I think we have had two or three close home meets where we’ve lost but we finally came out with the ‘W’ against a pretty good team (Stanford).”
