Pac-12 Wrestling Rankings Rolled Out and Seven Beavers Rated in Top Three of Their Weight Class

Seven out of 10 weight classes have OSU wrestlers in the top three and six of 10 have them in the top two

TEMPE, Ariz. – The first edition of the Pac-12’s weekly conference rankings are out and OSU is well represented in all 10 weight classes, with a total of seven in the top three and six in the top two.

Headlining the list of No. 1’s is 141 pounder Mike Mangrum, who holds a 24-4 overall record and a No. 4 national ranking. Following in Mangrum’s footsteps is the only other current OSU wrestler with 100 career wins, in heavyweight Chad Hanke. Hanke has posted a 21-3 record thus far and is rated No. 5 in the nation according to The Open Mat’s latest Poll. Other No. 1’s for Head Coach Jim Zalesky include 157 pounder RJ Pena, who has won two individual weight class championships this year and has posted winning streaks of five and 12. Pena is joined by Seth Thomas, who is No. 1 at 165 lbs. Thomas has only wrestled in tournament competition so far this season, but has a 13-3 record by his name, and carried a seven match winning streak into the Midlands Championships last month.

The pair of OSU wrestlers tabbed as No. 2 in the conference is 149 pounder Scott Sakaguchi and 197 pounder Taylor Meeks. Sakaguchi is No. 9 in the nation with a 14-4 record, while Meeks is also ranked No. 9 by The Open Mat and boasts as season record of 20-4.

Ty Vinson is the Beavers’ lone No. 3 representative as he finds himself in that slot among 184 pounders in the conference. Vinson is 12-7 so far during the 2012-13 season and is ranked No. 18 in the nation. Drew Van Anrooy (133 lbs.) and Austin Morehead (174 lbs.), are both ranked fourth in their weight class, while 125 pounder Pat Rollins rounds out the list of ranked Oregon State wrestlers at No. 6 in the conference.

The Pac-12 weight class rankings will be released on a weekly basis now that the heart of conference competition has begun. The rankings are voted on by the coaches whose school hosts the Pac-12 Championships, which this year is Arizona State.
