McMartin posts two bonus victories in pair of Bear losses

FAIRFAX, Va. – In a pair of duals at George Mason University, the Northern Colorado Wrestling team fought hard, but lost to both Drexel, 25-10 and George Mason, 18-17.

The Bears (0-3) were without star Justin Gonzales at 149 pounds and gave up six points right out of the gates, which ended up costing them the victory in the nightcap.

Sophomore Charlie McMartin earned bonus point wins in both matches at 165 pounds. McMartin won a major decision against Drexel's Connor Moran, 18-6 and followed it up with a 19-2 technical fall victory against George Mason's Kenton Perez.

Sophomore heavyweight also Henry Chirino won both bouts, improving to 17-7 on the year. Against the Dragons, Chirino won a 9-3 decision over Jon Max Wright and answered with a 3-2 victory over Jake Kettler from George Mason.

Junior Sam Bauer (133 pounds) was the only other Bear to win against Drexel, winning a close 3-2 decision over Clayton Lutzow to pull the Bears back within one, 7-6 in the team scoring.

Senior Patrick Gomez got things started in the second match against the Patriots, winning a 4-1 decision against Matt Meadows at 197 pounds for the 3-0 lead. Chirino followed with his second victory of the night for a 6-0 advantage.

Sophomore Jesse Meis (125 pounds) and Rich Lavorato were tied at 1-1 after three full periods, but Lavorato recorded a takedown for the 3-1 sudden victory. The Patriots tied the team score at 6-6 with a one-point decision at 133 pounds, took their first lead with a win at 141 pounds and the forfeit at 149 pounds gave them a 15-6 advantage.

Sophomore Mitchell Polkowske, coming off the hand injury won a thrilling 6-4 sudden victory over Jaaziah Bethea at 157 pounds and McMartin had the technical fall to bring the Bears back within one, 15-14.

Freshman Dylan Rutledge wrestled with a lot of heart, but lost a 3-1 decision to Seth Robertson at 174 pounds before sophomore Cody McAninch came so close to knotting the team score in the final bout, winning 11-5 over Corey Smith at 184 pounds for the 18-17 final.

The Bears begin Western Wrestling Conference action on Jan. 11 as they host Northern Iowa in Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion at 7 pm.
