The American University wrestling team will open the New Year at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn. Competition will begin on Tuesday, January 1 and conclude on Wednesday, January 2.
David Terao was seeded ninth at 125 lbs. in the tournament after posting a 13-7 record in competition so far this season. The redshirt freshman leads the Eagles in wins (13) and falls (5).
Three wrestlers will enter the tournament riding three-match win streaks. Phillip Barreiro, Blake Herrin and Kevin Tao all went undefeated in American's last three dual meets against No. 16 Maryland, George Mason and Old Dominion. Herrin owns the team's best record this season, posting an 11-3 mark at heavyweight. Tao has posted a 11-5 record this year at 149 lbs., leading the Eagles with four major decisions and also adding three falls. Barreiro is 7-5 this year at 165 lbs., registering one technical fall and one fall this season.Â
This year's Southern Scuffle field will feature 23 teams, including seven top-25 teams ranked in the USA Today/NWCA/AWN Division I Coaches Poll. This is the first time the Eagles will be competing at the event.
