Powerade 2012: Top 3 Things To Look For

Powerade: Top 3 Things To Watch For
Willie Saylor, Editor

We have a fabulous line-up for the Powerade this year, with several national, high-profile storylines to consider including several nationally ranked teams, and dozens and dozens of the best talents in America ready to hit head-to-head.

Look for the full preview in FloInsider forthcoming. And watch the star-studded finals live on Tech Wave.  But to whet your palate after that big Christmas dinner, here are the Top 3 Things to Look For in a special year at Powerade

3. Snyder - Haines II
Kyle Snyder is a national legend. He’ll no doubt go down as one of the greatest, perhaps THE greatest upperweights in High School wrestling history. He’s never lost a regular season match, winning the two Ironmans and the three Beasts he’s entered.
Thomas Haines is a PA legend. Only 10 wrestlers have ever won four PA state titles, and Haines is on pace to become the heaviest of them.
The two met in the finals of the Super 32 this year, with Snyder controlling the bout. Let’s see what’s in store for Round 2.

2. Joey McKenna’s Return
Blair Academy standout, Joey McKenna was ranked #1 at 120 before a gruesome injury at Cadet Worlds forced him to have surgery and be laid up. He’ll be making his 2012 debut here at Powerade and in a monster bracket.
A dream match-up looms with Connor Schram. The two had three epic bouts in freestyle this summer, with McKenna winning 2 and Schram 1.
But wait! That bout might not even happen. There are two other studs in the bracket, both whom have won Super 32 titles. Ryan Diehl and Michael Kemerer might have something to say about how this one plays out.

1. #1-Chance Marsteller vs. #2-Cody Wiercioch
Three Time PA State Champs are rare. Four-timers are even rarer. But that’s what these two are on pace to do. Chance has never lost a regular season match, Wiercioch has lost to only one person in his entire regular season career.
As big as that is, their success transcends Pennsylvania borders, with both having multiple major national tournament titles.
Marsteller has won Super 32, both styles of Fargo, and was on the Cadet World Team.
Wiercioch was the last high schooler to beat Taylor Massa, winning the first of his two Super 32 titles.
It’s truly a legendary match-up of national significance and one that will endure in the long history of PA lore.
