Wrestling finishes 2012 at Reno Tournament of Champions

RENO, Nev. – In the first tournament since final examinations, the Northern Colorado Wrestling team finished 22nd at the Reno Tournament of Champions with 15.5 points.

Junior Justin Gonzales (149 pounds) and sophomore Charlie McMartin (165 pounds) both won three bouts for the Bears, while redshirt freshman Nick Adams (141) and sophomore Henry Chirino (heavyweight) each won two. Gonzales entered the tournament as the fourth-seed, while Adams was seeded fifth and Chirino seventh.

Chirino advanced to the quarterfinals of the heavyweight bracket before losing 3-0 to 17th-ranked and second-seeded Jeremy Johnson from Ohio. He was the only wrestler to make it past the second round of the tournament that has been called the "toughest tournament in the USA."

Both of Adams' wins were by major decision in the second and third rounds of the consolation bracket, while two of McMartin's three victories were also by major decision and Gonzales recorded one. Senior Patrick Gomez also won one bout in the tournament, doing so with a 12-3 major decision and Chirino had the team's lone pin of the day, doing so over Stanford's Dahlton Brown in 3:21.

The Bears have concluded competition for the 2012 calendar season and will kick off the New Year at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Jan. 1.
