You always know there are going to be crazy upsets on Day I at Ironman, especially with the point-system-geared seeding. The fun part is, though try as you might, you just never know where they’re going to come from.

Below are the weight class breakdowns from Day I which highlights the upsets and high seeds that fell.

On the team side, Blair, despite a couple scares to their stars, rolled 10 individuals into the quarters. That’s the high water mark. Here are the Top 5 Team Scores after Day I with number of quarterfinalists in parentheses.

2. Wyoming Seminary, Pa   76pts (6)

5. Massillon Perry, OH   53.5  (6)

Surprisingly, the top eight seeds all held here, something that rarely happens at the Ironman in the lightweights. The closest scare came from Cadet GR Champ, Vincent Turk (Montini) who wrestled 2nd seeded Bryce Meredith to a 3-2 score.

Both the three and four seeds fell here as Dallas Smith (Robinson, VA) was edged by Isaac Bast and Tyler Berger (Hermiston, OR) dropped to Ryan Skonieczny.
Other several close bouts highlighted Day I in this bracket, though none were particularly big upsets.
Josh Maruca beat Xavi Ramos (McDonogh, MD), Collin Heffernan took out Jayce Carr (Union County, KY), Chris Garcia beat Cadet GR Champ, Joey Nelson (Wy Sem, PA), 2-1.

The biggest shock came from Josh Shields who dominated Super 32 Champ, Grant Leeth (Kearney, MO) to the tune of 8-3.
Jacob Danishek also looked great in a 12-3 major of Broomfield’s Phil Downing.
Joey Lavallee had a dominate performance in pinning Super 32 placer Zach Kelly (Kiski School) after leading the bout 9-0.

#4-Dylan Milonas (Blair Academy, NJ) vs. HM-Jake Danishek (Dayton Christian, OH)
HM-Josh Shields (Franklin Reg., Pa) vs. #7-Jack Clark (McDonogh, MD)

HM-Joey Lavallee (Reno, NV) vs. Tyler Fehrer (Delta, OH)
#11-Colt Cotton (Benton, PA) vs. #5-Edgar Bright (St. Edward, OH)

152lbs
Notes:
Two freshmen made all kinds of noise Friday, both beating state champs. First, Chris Weiler won a wild, scrambfest of a bout over top seeded Garrett Hammond (Chambersburg, PA)
Fellow Freshmen stud, Alex Marinelli had wins over State Champ Jordan Marshall and Cali and S32 placer, Shayne Tucker.
Both ranked on the Freshmen Big Board, Marinelli and Weiler will square off in the quarters tomorrow morning.

Quarter Match-Ups:
HM-Chris Weiler (Wy Sem, PA) vs. Alex Marinelli (St. Paris-Graham, OH)
Tony Dailey (Massillon-Perry, OH) vs. #6-Jack Bass (Robinson, VA)

Notes:
Moeller’s Dakota Sizemore was the highest seed (4th) to fall after losing to Quinton Hiles of Brecksville.

182lbs
Notes:
Pre-tournament #2 seed, and returning Ironman Runner-up, Domenic Abounader (St. Edward) was a late scratch with an ankle injury. That bumped everyone else up seed.
While all eight seeds held, there were some interesting results. Taylor Jackson beat Tyler Patrick (McDonogh, MD) 6-3. Harner dominated rookie sensation Sammy Colbray (Hermiston, OR), 9-2.

Quarterfinal Match-Ups:
#1-Eric Morris (Wy Sem, Pa) vs. Jake Turk (Montini, IL)
HM-Taylor Jackson (The Villages, FL) vs. #4-Brett Harner (Norristown, Pa)

Addison Knepshield (Blair Academy, NJ) vs. Immanuel Barber (Canyon Springs, CA)
HM-Travis Linton (Rootstown, OH) vs. #4-BJ Toal (Troy Christian, OH)

195lbs
Notes:
Both projected quarterfinalists in the bracket’s bottom most quarter were bounced. 2nd seeded Jerry Thornberry, coming off last weekend’s state football title, injury defaulted in the second round. Eight seed Matt Doggett (Wy Sem) was beaten by Ed’s Gabe Dzuro, setting up what is by far the most unlikely quarterfinal of tomorrow’s session.

Quarterfinal Match-Ups:
#5-Frank Mattiace (Blair Academy, NJ) vs. Nick Havener (CVCA, OH)
Jimmy Szep (Lake Catholic, OH) vs. #10-LJ Barlow (Haverford, Pa)

Adam Kluk (Medina-Highland, OH) vs. #16-Spencer Neff (Good Counsel, Md)
Gabe Dzuro (St. Edward, OH) vs. DJ Zissimos (Broomfield, CO)

220lbs
Notes:
The top seeds rolled racking up five falls and a tech in the eight bouts of the second round. While there wasn’t much to write home about at this weight from Day I, it’s a really solid group of quarterfinalists (featuring three Top 10 kids) that should make for some entertaining bouts in the AM.

Quarterfinal Match-Ups:
#2-Kyle Snyder (Good Counsel, Md) vs. Parker Knapp (St. Edward, OH)
Evan Rosborough (Plainsview-Riverside, OH) vs. Zane Krall (Wauseon, OH)

#5-Garrett Ryan (Wy Sem, Pa) vs. HM-Edgar Ruano (Montini, IL)
HM-Alex Campbell (Canon-Mac, Pa) vs. #7-Jo Jo Tayse (Massillon-Perry, OH)

HWT:
Notes:
All eight Round of 16 matches resulted in falls. And all but one came from the higher seeded wrestler. Only St. Ed’s Ralph Nichols, the seventh seed, didn’t make quarters.

Quarterfinal Match-Ups:
#2-Brooks Black (Blair Academy, NJ) vs. Drek Brumley (St. Vincent-St. Mary’s, OH)
Jamelle Avarette (Good Counsel, Md) vs. Jake Moore (Rootstown, OH)

Jake Pinkston (Robinson, VA) vs. Zach Deluca (Pitt CC, PA)
Stefano Millin (Massillon-Perry, OH) vs. #6-Michael Johnson, Jr. (Wy Sem, Pa)
