CLARION’S FLEMING WINS NLO TITLE AT 157 – GETS 100TH CAREER WIN

 

                (State College, Pa.): Clarion senior All-America wrestler James Fleming (West Mifflin), ranked third in the nation at 157, won the 157-pound individual title at the Nittany Lion Open on Sunday and in the process won his 100th career bout in a Clarion singlet.

 

                Held at Penn StateÂ’s Rec Hall, Fleming went 5-0 at the NLO – including an exciting 9-4 win in sudden victory over PSUÂ’s #5 ranked Dylan Alton in the championship final. The duo were tied 4-4 in regulation and went to overtime. In overtime Fleming posted a five-point move to win 9-4.

 

                During the day Fleming opened the tournament with a fall in his opening match over Mikey Simmons of Rutgers at 4:55. The win gave Fleming his 100th victory in style – it was his 31st career fall.

 

                Fleming went on to defeat Ben Dorsay of Maryland by tech. fall - 17-1 at 6:38, then won 6-0 over James Vollrath of PSU, before winning by disqualification over Brian Realbuto in advance of his win over Alton. Fleming has a season record of 12-0 and a career record of 104-16.

 

                “James wrestled a great tournament,” said Clarion first year head coach Troy Letters. “He was outstanding from start to finish and we congratulate him on his title and his 100th career win. ItÂ’s a great milestone.”

 

                Also posting multiple wins on Sunday but not placing were Sam Sherlock at 141, Steven Nelson at 174, Justin Ortega at 197, Phil Catrucco at 285 and Trey Hicks at 125.

 

Sherlock was 3-2 overall, winning his first three matches and losing his final two. Steven Nelson was 2-2 on the day winning his first two and losing the final two bouts, while Ortega won his first two bouts and lost his final two for a 2-2 mark.  Ortega lost a tough 3-2 decision to highly regarded Christian Boley of Maryland, and lost 9-7 to Paul Rands of Navy in sudden death.

 

Catrucco was 4-2 overall, going 1-1 in the championship bracket and 3-1 in the wrestle backs. Hicks meanwhile was 2-2 overall at 125.

CLARION NOTES: Fleming becomes the 20th wrestler in Clarion’s rich history of wrestling to reach 100 career wins… The most famous in the 100 win club are former two-time NCAA Division I National Champion Wade Schalles, and 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist Kurt Angle. Schalles still leads the Eagles all-time with a record of 153-5-1. Angle won two NCAA titles and had a second place finish putting together a record of 116-10-2. The last wrestler to reach 100 career wins was Hadley Harrison, in 2010, who finished with a record of 102-56…. A Sports Management major at Clarion, he is the son of John Fleming and Regina Fitzhenry…. CLARIONÂ’S FLEMING SEEKS 100TH CAREER WIN ON SUNDAY

GOLDEN EAGLE WRESTLERS COMPETE AT (PSU) NITTANY LION OPEN DEC. 2

 

                Clarion senior All-America wrestler James Fleming (West Mifflin) will be seeking his 100th career win on Sunday, while the Golden Eagle wrestling team competes at the prestigious Nittany Lion Open on Sunday, December 2. Over 500 wrestlers and 30 teams are expected to compete at the tournament which begins at 8:30am at PSUÂ’s Rec Hall.

 

                Fleming, who earned NCAA Division I All-America honors in 2012 by placing fifth at the national championships in St. Louis, is currently ranked third in the nation by AWN and Intermat at 157-pounds and is off to a 7-0 start this season. Fleming won the Clarion – Knight Point Open and then won individual bouts over #9 rated Scott Winston of Rutgers (7-5) and #19 ranked Aaron Sulzer of Eastern Michigan 5-0.

 

                Fleming currently has a career record at Clarion of 99-16. His next win will place him in the coveted 100-win plateau with the Golden Eagles. Nineteen (19) previous wrestlers have won 100 or more bouts in a Clarion singlet – the most famous of which are former two-time NCAA Division I National Champion Wade Schalles, and 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist Kurt Angle. Schalles still leads the Eagles all-time with a record of 153-5-1. Angle won two NCAA titles and had a second place finish putting together a record of 116-10-2. The last wrestler to reach 100 career wins was Hadley Harrison, in 2010, who finished with a record of 102-56.

 

                “This will be a special moment in an outstanding career,” said Clarion head coach Troy Letters. “James is totally dedicated to wrestling and has been an outstanding representative of Clarion wrestling during his career. He deserves every accolade he receives.”

 

In 2012 Fleming posted a 33-4 season record, placed 3rd at Midlands and won his second EWL title, placed second at PSAC's and posted 11 pins and 4 technical falls. A three-time NCAA Qualifier, James was 31-4 in 2011 and 1-2 at nationals. He was EWL and PSAC individual champion, EWL “Co-OW”, and placed 4th at Midlands. He had 11 pins and 5 tech. falls. In 2010 he posted a 28-8 record at 149-pounds, was 2nd at EWL's, 4th at PSAC's, PSAC “Freshman of the Year” and was an NCAA Qualifier with an 0-2 record. He has 30 career falls and 17 technical falls.

 

A Sports Management major at Clarion, he is the son of John Fleming and Regina Fitzhenry.

 

                Clarion enters the Nittany Lion duals with a dual meet record of 1-1 under first year head coach Troy Letters. The Golden Eagles opened the season with a 26-6 loss at Rutgers, then defeated Eastern Michigan 21-10.
