No. 5 Ohio State Defends CKLV Wrestling Invitational Title
Logan, Hunter Stieber win 133 and 141-pound titles, respectively
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Behind a pair of championship performances by
Logan and Hunter Stieber, the No. 5 Ohio State wrestling team won the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Wrestling Invitational Saturday at the Las Vegas Convention Center for the second
consecutive year. The Buckeyes collected 124.5 points and boasted six Top 4 finishes.
At the event’s conclusion, Logan Stieber was named the CKLV Invitational’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.
Missouri, who remained on Ohio State’s heels throughout the competition, finished one point behind the Buckeyes with 123.5 points, while Cornell rounded out the Top 3 with 104.5 points.
Stieber, a 133-pounder, had one of the more impressive performances of the tournament as he posted four pins en route to the final. In those four previous wins, Stieber, a redshirt sophomore, was on the mat for a total of 6:34, while
his final match went the full seven minutes. In the final, Stieber recorded a 12-1 major decision over No. 2 Nathan McCormick.
Sophomore Hunter Stieber’s run to the 141-pound title came on a five-match effort that included a fall and major decision in the preliminary rounds. In the championship bout, Stieber, the No.
1 seed downed No. 2 Michael Mangrum of Oregon State, 9-6.
A trio of Buckeyes in 125-pounder Nikko Triggas, 149-pounder
Cam Tessari and heavyweight Peter Capone
finished fourth in their respective weight classes. After four consecutive wins, Triggas, a senior, dropped a close 4-3 decision to No. 1 Allan Waters of Missouri. Triggas rebounded with an 18-10 major decision vs. Wyoming’s Tyler Cox in wrestlebacks
to attempt to finish third, but lost to No. 6 Josh Martinez, 4-3, in his final match.
Tessari was a winner of three consecutive matches before suffering a 6-4 setback to No. 2 Jason Chamberlain of Boise State in the championship bracket. In wrestlebacks, Tessari blanked Scott Sakaguchi of Oregon State, 5-0, for an opportunity
to finish third. However, Tessari, a sophomore, fell, 7-5, to Nebraska’s and No. 8 Jake Sueflohn.
Capone, a redshirt junior, lost, 6-4, in the third-place matchup to J.T. Felix of Boise State. A winner of three consecutive matches to open the event, Capone dropped a 7-4 decision to Oregon State’s and No. 2 Chad Hanke before rebounding
with an 8-0 shutout over Stryker Lane of Cornell in wrestlebacks.
In his first start of the season, Andrew Campolattano was a fifth-place finisher at 197 pounds. Following back-to-back losses, including a close 6-4 setback to No. 1 Dustin Kilgore of Kent State
in the semifinals, Campolattano answered with a 13-1 major decision win over No. 3 Brent Haynes of Missouri in the fifth-place bout.
Ohio State returns to action when it hosts No. 23 Kent State at 7 p.m. Dec. 14 in St. John Arena. The Buckeyes lead the all-time series vs. the Golden Flashes, 12-6, including a 22-15 win in Kent, Ohio, last season.
