Gonzales seventh, Chirino eighth at Cliff Keen Invitational

LAS VEGAS – Both junior Justin Gonzales (149 pounds) and sophomore Henry Chirino (heavyweight) were on the awards podium at the end of the evening at the prestigious Cliff Keen Invitational. Gonzales finished seventh, while Chirino was eighth in the two-day tournament. The Bears finished in a tie for 19th place with 29.5 points.

Saturday morning started with a great win for Gonzales as he won a 7-4 decision over 16th-ranked Drake Houdashelt from Missouri. Gonzales then lost in the quarterfinals of the consolation, 11-0 against Cornell's Christopher Villalonga, but finished in seventh-place with a medical forfeit win over #20 Daniel Young from Army.

Chirino received a medical forfeit victory in the fourth round over Atticus Disney from Cal Poly to advance to the quarterfinals in the consolation bracket. Chirino then lost his next two bouts to finish in eighth place, losing 1-0 to Stryker Lane from Cornell and 8-5 to Charles Merrill from Cal Baptist.

Fellow sophomore Charlie McMartin lost his first bout on Saturday, losing a 7-3 decision to Peyton Walsh from Navy. McMartin ended the tournament with a 3-2 record.

The Bears return to Nevada in two weeks to compete in the Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 16 to conclude the 2012 calendar year.
