Cal Poly Wrestlers to Compete in Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational
-- Cal Poly Wrestling --

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- The Cal Poly wrestling team will send a full 10-man squad to the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Wrestling Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the Las Vegas Convention Center (Hall C-5).

Competition at the 31st annual event begins Friday with pigtail-round action. Quarterfinals and consolation matches are scheduled for 6 p.m.

The fourth round of consolation matches Saturday begins at 9 a.m., followed by the semifinals and the rest of the wrestlebacks at 10 a.m. The championship finals will begin at 3 p.m.

The field of 32 teams includes Pac-12 members Cal Poly, Arizona State, No. 21 Boise State, CSU Bakersfield and No. 12 Oregon State along with other national powers such as No. 5 Ohio State, No. 7 Missouri, No. 8 Cornell, No. 16 Nebraska, No. 18 Northern Iowa, No. 19 Kent State, No. 22 Virginia, No. 24 North Dakota State and No. 25 Michigan.

Cal Poly's only nationally ranked wrestler is 174-pound sophomore Dominic Kastl, listed No. 12 in his weight class by InterMat. Kastl, the reigning Pac-12 champion at 165 pounds, will not compete in the Las Vegas Invitational due to injury.

The Mustangs will send six freshmen to Las Vegas, led by 133-pounder Devon Lotito, who is 10-3 on the year and won his weight class at the Keystone Invitational two weeks ago in Philadelphia.

Mustang 184-pounder Sean Dougherty (7-4), a junior, and 285-pounder Atticus Disney (8-4), a senior, both placed fifth in the Keystone Invitational.

The rest of the Mustang lineup for Las Vegas includes freshman Evan McKirdy (7-6) at 125 pounds, junior Brandan Rocha (7-4) at 141, redshirt freshman Damien Arredondo (0-0) at 149, junior Kyle Chene (4-2) at 157, freshman Connor King (3-5) at 165, freshman Mitch Woods (0-6) at 174 and freshman J.T. Goodwin (3-5) at 197.

A year ago, the Mustangs placed 11th at the Las Vegas Invitational, with Ryan DesRoches capturing the 174-pound title and Boris Novachkov (141) and Disney (285) both placing fifth. DesRoches is now a Mustang assistant coach.

Cal Poly placed ninth as a team at the Keystone Invitational, sports an 0-2 mark in dual meets (losses to Drexel and CSU Bakersfield) and also competed in the non-scoring Roadrunner Open in Fresno.

After the Las Vegas Invitational this weekend, the Mustangs will host Cal Baptist for their first home dual of the season on Friday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m. in Mott Gym.
