GREELEY – The Northern Colorado Wrestling Team won five of 10 weight classes at its only home tournament of the season, the Old Chicago Open. The Bears had three wins by wrestlers in a Blue and Gold singlet, while the other two came by unattached grapplers.

Redshirt freshman Nick Adams won at 141 pounds, junior Justin Gonzales won the 149 weight class and sophomore Henry Chirino pinned his way through the heavyweight bracket. Redshirts Nick Bayer (184 pounds) and Brian Macchione(197 pounds) were also victorious, competing unattached.

Freshman Iver Sandoval finished in second place at 165 pounds, while sophomore Charlie McMartin was third in the same weight class. SophomoreJosh Van Tine also had a second-place finish at 174 pounds, while freshmanKeith Johnson finished fifth at 184 pounds

"This was a good tournament for us," Head Coach Ben Cherrington said. "We had the potential to win a couple more classes too, but anytime you have a good home tournament it's positive. We were the biggest team here and were the class of the field, which is how it should be."

Adams won all three of his matches en route to the Outstanding Wrestler Award and did so by winning all three with bonus point wins. After a bye in the first round, Adams took the mat and pinned Shannon Maris, competing unattached, in 2:39. He then had identical technical falls in the semifinals and finals, 15-0 to beat Western Wyoming's Brock Dalton and Utah Valley's Sam Mecham, respectively.

"Nick Adams has been wrestling very, very well, not like a freshman at all," Cherrington said. "He has a tenacity and heart you can't coach and he wins matches because of it."

Gonzales improved to a perfect 10-0 on the season with a 5-0 run through the Old Chicago Open. In the first two rounds he recorded falls, pinning Michael Rivera in 1:54 in the opening round and then pinned Chalen Keys from Western State in 1:52 in the second round. He won a 7-3 decision over Air Force Prep's Natrelle Demison in the quarterfinals and a 4-2 decision against Eleazar DeLuca from OTC in the semifinals before winning an 11-3 major decision in the championship bout against Justin Schumacher from Colorado Mesa.

"Justin stayed undefeated, which is always positive," Cherrington said. "He's been consistent, yet he is getting better and better with each match he wrestles. He's been analyzing techniques outside of practice and if he keeps that attitude, he will keep winning."

Chirino won the Most Pins Award after pinning all four of his opponents and spending just over 21 minutes on the mats. In the first round, he pinned Markese Christian from Wayland Baptist in 4:40, then pinned Francisco Retana from Colorado Mesa in 6:48 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he fell Alexander MacKenzie from Colorado Mines in 6:43 and took just 2:53 to pin Christophe Klei from Northwest Kansas Tech in the finals.

"Chirino was completely dominant," Cherrington said. "He had four pins in four matches. He set that goal prior to today and he achieved it. He's been putting in a lot of extra work and has dedicated himself to be the very best he can be. It's been good to see him dominate not only in the practice room, but also out on the mat."

Sandoval also finished second at 165 pounds and posted a record of 4-1 on the day, winning all four bouts by decision. McMartin had a bye in the first round and lost his second round bout before fighting all the way through the backdraw to finish third at 165 pounds with a 5-1 record with two falls, a major decision and a pair of decisions. In the semifinals, McMartin got revenge on Caleb Wyatt from Colorado Mesa, who defeated him in the second round, 9-4 by winning 15-6 to advance to the third-place match.

At 174 pounds, Van Tine posted a record of 2-1 to finish in second place. He had a bye in the first round and then won a 13-4 major decision over Dominic Bejarano from Northwest Kansas in the quarterfinals. He won the semifinal 6-3 before losing 12-5 in the finals to Aaron Meister, who was competing unattached.
