CLARION LOSES 26-6 TO #18 RUTGERS

                (Piscataway, N.J.): ClarionÂ’s James Fleming and Justin Ortega posted wins but it wasnÂ’t enough  as the Golden Eagle wrestling team opened its 2012-13 wrestling season on Sunday with a 26-6 loss at #26 ranked Rutgers.

                Clarion is 0-1 and Rutgers 1-0 on the young season.

                The match started at 133-pounds and the Golden Eagles lost the first three matches and were down 10-0 from the start. Joe Waltko lost 8-3 to Vincent Dellafave at 133, Sam Sherlock lost 11-0 to Trevor Melde at 141 and Tyler Bedelyon lost 3-2 to Marion Mason.

                In the Bedelyon bout, Tyler scramble in the final seconds and got behind Mason and took him down as the buzzer sounded the end of the bout. The takedown was waived of as being awarded just after time ran out.

                ClarionÂ’s #4 ranked James Fleming won a 7-5 decision over #9 Scott Winston at 157. With Fleming trailing 5-4 in the third, and Fleming on top, the Golden Eagle All-American turned Winston for a three point near fall with about0-seconds left to win the match 7-4.

                Nick Milano lost 8-1 to Nick Visicaro at 165, Ryan Darch lost a 10-1 major decision to #16 Greg Zanetti at 174, and Steven Cressley lost a 601 decision to Dan Rinaldi at 184 and Rutgers led 20-3.

                 Newcomer Justin Ortega posted a 3-1 decision for the Golden Eagles at 197 in defeating Dan Seidenberg. The bout had no score in the first period, then Ortega reversed to start the second and rode his opponent the remainder of the period. Seidenberg escaped in the third and Ortega had riding time for a 3-1 win.

                Phil Catrucco lost a 6-1 decision to Billy Smith at heavyweight, and freshman Tyler Fraley lost a hard-fought 5-3 decision to Joe Langel at 125 to end the match.

                “We wrestled well in some bouts, and we could have taken the battle to Rutgers more in some others,” commented first year head coach Troy Letters. “We need to build from here.”

                Clarion will host Eastern Michigan at Waldo S. Tippin Gym on Sunday, November 18^th at 2pm.
