CITY, Iowa –
Oregon State wrestling’s director of operations, Nick Simmons, finished
second in his bid for the London Olympics on Sunday at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
Additionally,
Chad Hanke, who redshirted this past collegiate season, finished the trials
with a 1-2 record in the 120 kilogram class.
Simmons
advanced to the championship round with two early wins, then took on Sam
Hazewinkel for the right to represent the United States at the 2012 London
Olympics. Simmons won the first round of 55 kilogram freestyle championship
event, 3-0, 0-5 and 5-4.

tied it up at one apiece with a 0-1, 1-0, 2-0 win in the second round before
winning in the third championship round, 0-1, 4-0, 3-0.
The
second-place finish places Simmons, who is in his third year at Oregon State,
as the alternate for the Summer Games.
He
opened competition Sunday by defeating Matt McDonough, 1-0, 5-0, and then
advanced to the championship bout by downing Henry Cejudo in three periods,

Hanke
did not officially place in Sunday’s competition. He dropped a two-period
bout to Les Sigman, 1-0, 7-0, to start his day. He then defeated John Helgerson
in three periods – 1-0, 0-1 and 1-1.
His
day was completed in his third bout, losing in two periods, 1-0, 2-0, to Jarod
Trice.
