Eight Buckeyes Qualify for 2012 NCAA Championships
Logan Stieber earns No. 2 seed at 133 pounds
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Eight members of the Ohio State wrestling team were officially selected Wednesday to compete at the 2012 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. The event will take place March 15-17 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo.
Redshirt freshman Logan Stieber headlines the Buckeye contingent with the No. 2 seed at 133 pounds. Stieber, a native of Monroeville, Ohio, won the 2012 Big Ten title this past Sunday after beating No. 2 seed Tony Ramos of Iowa, 5-2, in the championship final. For the season, Stieber has a team-leading 28 wins (two losses).
Hunter Stieber, a true freshman, is the No. 5 seed in the 141-pound bracket. H. Stieber finished third at the conference championships, beating Minnesota’s Nick Dardanes, 7-6, for the Top 3 placing. He will enter the national tournament with an overall record of 25-4.
At 149 pounds, Cam Tessari earned the No. 10 seed. Tessari, who placed fifth this past Sunday in the 149-pound competition, automatically qualified for the national tournament. Hailing from Monroeville, Ohio, the freshman has posted a 20-win season with his 22 victories vs. nine losses.
Also seeded 10th, redshirt sophomore Nick Heflin finished sixth in his respective weight class of 174 pounds at the league championships Sunday. The Massillon, Ohio, native seeks to improve on his 23-8 ledger.
The remaining Buckeye qualifiers include Johnni Dijulius, Josh Demas, Andrew Campolattano and Peter Capone.
Demas’ (Fr., Columbus, Ohio) sixth-place finish at 157 pounds also was enough for him to automatically qualify and he will begin competition in St. Louis with a 20-13 record. At 197 pounds, freshman Campolattano will compete in his first NCAA national event thanks to his Top 4 placing (4th) in West Lafayette at the conference championships. The Bound Brook, N.J., native owns a 20-12 record. In the heavyweight category, Capone, a redshirt sophomore from Johnson City, N.Y., will head to St. Louis with a 14-15 overall record. Capone’s 10th-place finish at the Big Ten championships was sufficient to book him a ticket to St. Louis.
At 125 pounds, Dijulius was an at-large selection following his seventh-place finish in the Big Ten championships. A native of Aurora, Ohio, Dijulius now owns an overall mark of 19-13.
