No. 6 Ohio State Falls to No. 1 Oklahoma State

Buckeyes drop 25-6 decision to top-ranked Cowboys

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 6 Ohio State wrestling team lost a 25-6 decision to top-ranked Oklahoma State Sunday in the Stillwater Regional final at the 2012 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals at Gallagher-Iba Arena. Oklahoma State was one of four regional hosts.

The Buckeyes opened “Mat Mayhem” with back-to-back wins vs. Boise State (26-9) and Nebraska (21-18) earlier in the day. Against the Cowboys, the Scarlet and Gray received wins from a pair of freshmen in No. 5 Hunter Stieber and No. 20 Josh Demas. Stieber downed Josh Kindig 7-6 at 133 pounds, while Demas upset No. 11 Albert White 3-2 at 157 pounds.

Stieber, a native of Monroeville, Ohio, owned a 5-4 lead heading to the third period, but his lead would not last long as Kindig chose bottom and quickly scored the escape. However, Stieber answered with a takedown and despite an escape by Kindig, held on for the victory.

A takedown and escape by Demas, a Columbus, Ohio, native, was enough to seal his win over White. Although White scored a quick escape in the third period to pull within one (3-2), Demas prevented any additional scoring by the Cowboy. At this point, the Buckeyes trailed Oklahoma State by only three points (9-6).

The losses suffered by Ohio State were close affairs, including a pair of one-point setbacks. At 149 pounds, freshman Cam Tessari had a slim 1-0 advantage going into the third period. However, the Buckeye’s opponent, No. 2 Jamal Parks, scored an escape and takedown in succession for a 3-1 lead and held on for the win despite Tessari’s late-second escape.

Redshirt sophomore Nick Heflin started at 184 pounds and faced Chris McNeil. Heflin and McNeil were knotted up at 2-2 in the third period when McNeil’s escape at the 1:54 mark proved to be the match winner.  HowHo

No. 6 Buckeyes Beat No. 8 Nebraska, 21-18

With win, Ohio State advances to regional final; faced No. 1 Oklahoma State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A 4-3 win by freshman Andrew Campolattano at 197 pounds helped the No. 6 Ohio State wrestling team hold on for the 21-18 win over No. 8 Nebraska Sunday in the Stillwater Regional semifinal round of the 2012 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals. The regional, hosted by Oklahoma State at Gallagher-Iba Arena, is part of the NWCA’s “Mat Mayhem.”

The Huskers nearly rallied from an 18-point deficit, winning four consecutive matches from 157-184 pounds to pull within six points (18-12) with two bouts remaining. However, Campolattano, a Bound Brook, N.J., native handed Spencer Johnson a 4-3 loss to lock up the Buckeye win. Campolattano ended a 2-2 deadlock in the third period when he scored a reversal with 1:28 remaining. Johnson answered with an escape with just 58 seconds left in the match, but Campolattano was able to hold on for the win.

Ohio State jumped out to an 18-0 lead when three of its four opening matches were bonus point wins. Freshman and 16th-ranked Johnni Dijulius scored a 20-5 technical fall over Shawn Nagel. With the score tied 2-2 at the end of the first period, Dijulius tallied nine additional points on a pair of 3-point nearfalls, a takedown and escape, while also shutting out Nagel in the second period. In the final period, Dijulius, who hails from Aurora, Ohio, sealed the win courtesy of more back points, two takedowns, an escape and riding time, while Nagel scored an escape and takedown.

Redshirt freshman Logan Stieber, ranked third in the nation, posted a 16-3 major decision win over No. 18 Ridge Kiley at 133 pounds. Stieber, a native of Monroeville, Ohio, held a 9-1 lead at the end of the first period thanks to a pair of takedowns and back points. Scoring by Stieber slowed down in the second period when he compiled three points on a takedown and escape, while limiting Kiley to just one takedown and two escapes for the match. In the third period, Stieber scored three more points (takedown and escape) for the final.

L. Stieber’s younger brother, Hunter Stieber beat No. 9 Jake Sueflohn 8-7 at 141 pounds in the next match. Up 6-5 in the third period, H. Stieber scored a crucial takedown with 23 seconds remaining to take an 8-5 lead. However, Sueflohn rebounded with an escape to cut the Buckeye’s lead to two (8-6) and not longer after, H. Stieber was called for his second stalling to give Sueflohn a point. However, H. Stieber prevented any additional scoring by Sueflohn and held on for the victory.

No. 15 Cam Tessari added to Ohio State’s lead when he pinned Brandon Wilbourn in 4:33. The Buckeye freshman from Monroeville, Ohio, owned a 6-2 lead before the pin.

The Huskers would go on to win five of the next six matches. At 157 pounds, No. 20 and redshirt freshman Josh Demas dropped a close 5-3 decision to No. 7 James Green, while freshman Derek Garcia fell 7-2 to No. 6 Robert Kokesh at 165 pounds.  A takedown with 22 seconds left by No. 20 Tyler Koehn was enough to hand No. 7 and redshirt sophomore Nick Heflin a 3-1 loss in the 174-pound bout. No. 11 and redshirt junior C.J. Magrum suffered a 5-0 loss to No. 8 Josh Ihnen at 184 pounds. Finally, at heavyweight, redshirt sophomore Peter Capone was pinned in 2:02 by No. 9 Tucker Lane.
