OSU Wrestling Narrowly Falls In Even
Matchup With No. 13 Wyoming
CORVALLIS,
Ore. –
The dual between No. 16 Oregon State and 13th-ranked Wyoming Sunday
was expected to be an equal matchup before the teams even stepped on the mat.
That
was exactly what the 1,086 fans in attendance at Gill Coliseum got. The teams
tied, 22-22, after 10 bouts but the Cowboys were declared the victors after
taking into account individual points, a tiebreaker.
Both
teams picked up two pins apiece – Pat Rollins and RJ Pena for OSU and
Zach Zehner and Joe LeBlanc for Wyoming – in addition to one major
decision. That left point differential, which Wyoming won, giving the Cowboys
the 23-22 decision.
OSU
held an 18-6 advantage after Pena pinned Dakota Friesth in 2:50 for the victory
at 157 pounds. The Cowboys, however, picked up the next 16 points to go up
22-18.
That
left the heavyweight bout featuring Clayton Jack and LJ Helbig. Jack won
handedly, 13-1, but needed a technical fall or pin to give the Beavers the win.
His four points put the Beavers on par with the Cowboys, necessitating the
tiebreaker.
Rollins
started the bout at 125 and picked up his 20th win of the season
with a pin of Michael Martinez in 3:37. That avenged an earlier loss for
Rollins to Martinez.
Wyoming
answered back when Zehner pinned James Roberts in 3:22 at 133 pounds.
That
was followed by the longest bout of the day. Mike Mangrum and Chase Smith went
to a second sudden victory at 141 pounds where Mangrum was victorious with a
takedown, giving him a 5-3 win.
Scott
Sakaguchi gave the Beavers their second consecutive win when he was a 6-0
winner over Brandon Richardson at 149 pounds. The win gave him a 25-5 record on
the year.
Sakaguchi’s
put OSU up, 12-6, before Pena’s pin. Pena’s victory was his 22nd
of the season; it was his 17th of the season, just two shy of tying
the OSU single-season record for a sophomore and it was also the 30th
of his career.
The
loss puts the Beavers at 5-2 this season while Wyoming improved to 2-2.
The
Beavers return to action Friday when hosting Northern Colorado in a 7 p.m. PT
dual at Gill Coliseum.
