Scuffle; OSU Wrestling Finishes Fifth
CHATTANOOGA,
Tenn. –
Mike Mangrum started the 2012 calendar year on a high note, taking first at 141
pounds in the Southern Scuffle, which concluded on Monday. Overall, the Oregon
State wrestling team finished fifth out of 22 teams.
Mangrum
went a perfect 5-0 over the two-day event to push his season mark to 23-2. He
pinned Virginia’s Nick Nelson in 6:56 in a semifinal bout to open
Monday’s action – after going 3-0 Sunday – before winning the
title with a 3-1 decision over North Carolina State’s Darius Little.
He
tied for the individual lead with three pins during the two days, and he earned
the Beavers 29 points, just half off the tournament-lead.
Mangrum,
riding a five-bout win streak, is now 79-24 during his three-year Oregon State
career.
Mangrum
highlighted the Beavers’ afternoon, which saw the team accumulate 103
points. Penn State finished first, followed by Minnesota, Missouri and Cornell.
Four
others finished in the top four in their respective weight classes for the
Beavers. Clayton Jack was second at heavyweight, Scott Sakaguchi took third at
149 pounds, and Garrett Drucker was fourth at 133 pounds. Chad Hanke, who is an
Olympic redshirt this season and was a non-scorer in Chattanooga, also took
third at heavyweight.
Jack
opened the day by pushing his win streak to 24 after defeating Penn
State’s Cameron Wade, 4-3, in the semifinals. But it was snapped at 24
after he lost a 2-0 decision to Minnesota’s Anthony Nelson in the final.
Jack
finished the tournament 4-1 overall and is 24-1 this season.
Sakaguchi
lost his semifinal bout to Frank Molinaro of Penn State, but went on to win his
next two bouts, claiming a 5-2 decision over Missouri’s Kyle Bradley
– whom Sakaguchi had defeated 8-5 earlier this season at Gill Coliseum
– in the third-place bout. Sakaguchi went 5-1 over the two days to push
his record to an impressive 23-5 this season.
Drucker
won his first three bouts on Monday before dropping a 6-4 decision to
Minnesota’s David Thorn to end his day. Drucker tied for the second-most
bouts among all wrestlers at the Scuffle, and finished 6-2, making him 17-5 in
2011-12.
Hanke,
meanwhile, dropped his semifinal bout to Minnesota’s Anthony Nelson, 6-2,
but finished third after consecutive a pin over Ohio’s Andy Hartshorn in
4:04 and a 7-3 decision over Wade, who had lost to Jack in his semifinal.
Pat
Rollins also wrestled one bout on Monday, but lost, 19-2, to Penn State’s
Nicholas Megaludis, falling one win shy of placing in the top eight.
The
Beavers return to action on Sunday when competing in a Pac-12 bout at Arizona
State.
