Three In Semifinals As OSU Wrestling Places Fifth After Day One In Tennessee

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Mike Mangrum, Scott Sakaguchi and Clayton Jack are all in the semifinals at the Southern Scuffle as the Oregon State wrestling team is fifth after one day of competition.

Additionally, Chad Hanke, who is an Olympic redshirt this season, is one of four semifinalists at heavyweight, joining Jack. Mangrum is one of four at 141 pounds and Sakaguchi is a semifinalist at 149 pounds.

All told, of the 13 wrestlers with OSU ties originally entered, seven are still active for the fifth-place Beavers, who have 66.5 team points. Penn State is first (119.5 points), followed by No. 2 Minnesota (110.5), No. 3 Missouri (82) and No. 4 Cornell (80). OSU wrestlers are 3-2 in bouts against opponents from the top four squads.

Mangrum registered a 4-0 mark on Sunday to pace the Beavers; he was the only OSU wrestler to accumulate four wins, and in the process, improved to 22-2 on the year. He picked up two pins and two major decisions and will open against Virginia’s Nick Nelson on Monday in a semifinal matchup.

Sakaguchi has the chance to post his highest finish since taking first at the Best of the West in the opening weekend of the season. He went 3-0 at 149 pounds on Sunday, improving to 21-4 this season. Sakaguchi takes on Frank Molinaro of Penn State in the semifinal opener Monday; the two have not met this season.

Jack, meanwhile, kept his perfect record intact with a 3-0 mark, improving to 23-0 this season. He moved to the semifinal round with a 10-1 major decision victory over Cornell’s Maciej Jochym. Jack opens against Penn State’s Cameron Wade on Monday. Wade is ranked eighth nationally while Jack is fourth.

A win would push Jack into the championship bout, and he could face Hanke, who also went 3-0. However, wins by both would most likely feature a forfeit on behalf of Hanke as was the case in Reno two weeks ago. Hanke will square off against Minnesota’s Anthony Nelson in the semifinals.

The four highlighted OSU’s day Sunday but three other Beavers are still alive for third in the consolation brackets.

Pat Rollins lost his opening bout but responded with three consecutive decisions at 125 to advance to Monday’s competition. He is now 18-9 this season. Rollins will continue his quest for third Monday against Penn State’s Nicholas Megaludis.

Garrett Drucker is also alive after going 3-1, improving to 14-4 at 133 pounds. He opened with a 13-3 major decision over Indiana’s Joe Duca, then, after losing by a pin, went 2-0 via a pin and major decision. Drucker opens against Hofstra’s Jamie Franco on Monday.

The last of the three in the consolation round is John Tuck at 184 pounds. Tuck went 3-1 Sunday to improve to 12-10 this season. He picked up a pin and two decisions and will square off against Missouri’s Mike Larson on Monday.

Four other Oregon State wrestlers competed on Sunday. They included: James Roberts (0-2 at 133 pounds), RJ Pena (1-2 at 157 pounds), Cody Weishoff (1-2 at 165 pounds) and Joe Latham (0-2 at 165 pounds). Taylor Meeks was entered at 197 pounds but forfeited twice.

Oregon State continues competition at the two-day Scuffle on Sunday.
