Currently No. 9, the Top 10 standing came after the Panthers knocked off a pair of No. 6 teams in Lehigh (18-16) and Michigan (19-13). With a 3-0 dual record, Pittsburgh most recently finished eighth at the CKLV invitational Dec. 2-3 behind junior Matt Wilps’ third-place finish at 197 pounds. In all, six Panthers are ranked in the Top 20 of the latest Intermatwrestle.com standings, including No. 6 Wilps, who owns a 12-2 overall record and 3-0 dual mark.
Buckeyes vs. Panthers
Ohio State has a slight advantage over Pittsburgh in the all-time series at 10-9. Last season, the Buckeyes dropped an 18-17 decision to the Panthers, but had won three consecutive matches, including a 30-3, win in Columbus in 2006, prior to last season’s setback.
Scouting Kent State
With a 2-2 dual record, Kent State two matches to a pair of Big Ten Conference teams in Nebraska (17-19) and Illinois (18-24) at the Wrestle for a Cure Duals in November. However, the Golden Flashes rebounded with wins against Navy (24-15) and Edinboro (22-15). In its most recent event, Kent State finished ninth in the CKLV invitational courtesy of Nic Bedelyon’s championship performance at 125 pounds. Currently 16-0 overall and 3-0 in dual competition, Bedelyon is the second-ranked wrestler in the nation at 125 pounds. In all, four Golden Flashes are ranked in the Top 20 of the latest Intermatwrestle.com polls.
Buckeyes vs. Golden Flashes
The meeting Sunday will serve as the first between Ohio State and Kent State since 2009, a 20-15 Buckeye win in Columbus. The year before, the Scarlet and Gray posted a 27-6 victory at Kent State, snapping a two-match losing streak to the Golden Flashes.
