Narrowly Edged By No. 13 Missouri
CORVALLIS,
Ore. –
Taylor Meeks and Clayton Jack provided the 1,448 fans in attendance at Gill
Coliseum with some late excitement on Friday night, but their falls were not
enough to overcome No. 13 Missouri’s lead in the No. 17 Beavers’
21-18 loss.
Meeks
and Jack both picked up falls to bring the Oregon State fans to their feet, and
in the process, kept their season records perfect at 9-0 and 8-0, respectively.
The Beavers eventually lost by three points but maintained close bouts
throughout the night against the Tigers from the Big 12 Conference.
Missouri,
now 2-1 on the year, won four of its six individual bouts by decisions. Of
those four victories, the average win came by less than four points, just
enough for the win.
Meeks,
with the Beavers down 21-6 after four consecutive individual wins by Missouri,
picked up the Beavers’ first bonus points of the night when he pinned
Brent Haynes in 4:23. Haynes came into the match ranked 12th
nationally at 197 pounds by Intermat and ended the night as Meeks’ fifth
pin of the season.
Meeks
was followed closely by Jack at the heavyweight class. The Vacaville, Calif.,
native downed Missouri’s Devon Mellon in 2:05, capping the Beavers’
night with his fifth pin of the season and 32nd of his career. Jack
improved to 90-34 all-time and 46-13 in dual meets.
The
three-point advantage was earned by Missouri via a technical fall by No. 5 Alan
Waters at 125 pounds and a major decision by Mike Larson at 184 pounds. Waters
defeated Oregon State’s (2-1) Pat Rollins, 19-3, and Larson, in the
eighth bout of the night, was victorious by an 8-0 score over John Tuck.
Nathan
McCormack followed Waters’ victory with a 9-3 decision over James Roberts
at 133. The loss marked the first of the year for Roberts who dropped to 8-1.
Two
other Beavers kept their perfect seasons intact following the loss at 133. It
took Mike Mangrum an overtime period, but he defeated Missouri’s Brandon
Wiest, 7-5, at 141 pounds. Mangrum improved to 8-0; Friday’s win was his
first decision of the 2011-12 campaign.
Scott
Sakaguchi pushed his record to 8-0 on the year when he downed Kyle Bradley,
8-5, at 149 pounds. Sakaguchi came into the meet ranked eighth while Bradley
was 15th. The bout was the only one of the night to feature two
ranked wrestlers.
Missouri
went on a four-bout win streak after Sakaguchi’s win streak, however,
pushing to a 21-6 lead. Drake Houdashelt defeated RJ Pena, 11-7, at 157 pounds
and was followed by Zach Toal, who won, 3-1, over Cody Weishoff at 165.
Dorian
Henderson (174) then defeated Ty Vinson, 5-2, in the last bout decided by a
decision.
The
Beavers are off until next weekend when they participate in the Cliff Keen
Invitational in Las Vegas on Friday and Saturday.
