Cowboys Roll Cyclones In Opener

AMES, Iowa – The No. 2 Oklahoma State wrestling team stormed past Iowa State in its first dual of the 2011-12 season, earning a 29-9 win in front of 2,248 at Hilton Coliseum.

The Cowboys improve to 1-0 (1-0 Big 12) on the year, while the Cyclones fall to 0-4 (0-1 Big 12).

“Overall, I was pleased with a few of them that wrestled really well,” coach John Smith said. “Jordan Oliver and Josh Kindig – stepping up and getting quick falls. I even liked Bailey’s first two periods. He looked like he quit a little bit in the third. Chris McNeil gave me a lot of hope in the third period, scoring that takedown, and he should have scored the second one.

“It was definitely an eye-opener for me that I saw several areas, especially on our feet and on the mat that we need to work on.”

Senior transfer Cayle Byers, wrestling in dual competition for the first time as a Cowboy, opened the night with a 9-1 major decision over ISUÂ’s Cole Shafer to give OSU a 4-0 lead. The 197-pounder is now 8-0 on the year.

Alan Gelogaev was up next for the Cowboys at heavyweight. The junior, seeing his first dual action since 2010, picked up a 9-3 win over No. 19 Matt Gibson, to increase the lead to 7-0.

After Sophomore Ladd Rupp fell in the closest match of the night to No 9 Ryak Finch, 6-4, at 125 pounds, top-ranked Jordan Oliver began his quest to defend his national title with a fall over Shayden Terukina in 2:38 at 133.

Sophomore Josh Kindig followed Oliver with a pin of his own at 141 pounds to break the dual open for the Cowboys with a 19-3 advantage. KindigÂ’s fall was recorded in just 1:57 against Luke Goettl.

Senior All-American Jamal Parks won a 6-3 decision at 149 pounds, before senior Albert White recorded a 13-5 major decision at 157 pounds to earn the CowboyÂ’s fourth bonus-point win of the night.

Dallas Bailey and Chris McNeil then lost close decisions at 165 and 174 pounds and No. 9 Chris Perry won 9-2 over No. 12 Boaz Beard to give the Cowboys a 29-9 final advanage and a team win in their first dual of the season.

Oklahoma State resumes Dec. 4 when they take on fourth-ranked Minnesota at 1 p.m. at Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater.

197: No. 2 Cayle Byers (OSU) MD Cole Shafer (ISU); 9-1

Senior newcomer Cayle Byers got both his Cowboy career and the 2011-12 dual season started on a strong note as he earned a 9-1 major decision over Cole Shafer. After a scoreless first period, Byers recorded the first points of the season with a takedown in the second. Shafer escaped after a lengthy ride to make it 2-1 entering the third. Byers escaped to start the final period and recorded a takedown and a three-point nearfall to take an 8-1 lead. His 1:49 riding time advantage gave him the extra point and a 9-1 major decision.

 

285: No. 4 Alan Gelogaev (OSU) dec. No. 19 Matt Gibson (ISU); 9-3

Alan Gelogaev made the most of his first dual action since 2010, picking up a 9-3 decision over 19th-ranked Matt Gibson. Gelogaev took down Gibson twice in the opening period to take a 4-1 lead. After beginning the second with a long ride, Gelogaev cut Gibson loose and picked up another quick takedown to go up 6-2 and take a 2:47 riding time advantage into the third. Gelogaev earned a reversal in the final period, before Gibson picked up his third escape. Gelogaev’s dominant 4:04 riding time advantage gave him the 9-3 decision.

 

125: No. 9 Ryak Finch (ISU) dec. Ladd Rupp (OSU); 6-4

In the closest match of the night, Ladd Rupp narrowly upset ninth-ranked Ryak Finch. Finch took a 4-0 lead with a takedown in the first and a reversal to open the second, but Rupp answered with an escape and takedown to cut the lead to 4-3. Finch escaped to close the period and take a 5-3 lead into the final period. Rupp chose down and escaped in the third, but could not record the necessary final takedown to send the match into overtime as FinchÂ’s 1:29 riding time advantage gave him the 6-3 decision.

 

133: No. 1 Jordan Oliver (OSU) fall Shayden Terukina (ISU); 2:38

Jordan Oliver again showed why he is worthy of his No. 1 ranking, as the junior recorded a takedown and two-point nearfall before pinning Shayden Terukina in 2:38. Oliver, who won the national title with a 29-0 record last year, improves to 1-0 in 2011-12.

 

141: No. 7 Josh Kindig (OSU) fall Luke Goettl (ISU); 1:57

Josh Kindig, seeing his first action of the year, followed OliverÂ’s performance with a pin of his own, taking down Luke Goettl before earning the fall in just 1:57.

 

149: No. 2 Jamal Parks (OSU) dec. Joey Cozart (ISU); 6-3

Senior All-American Jamal Parks moved to 6-0 on the year with his 6-3 decision over Joey Cozart. Parks took down and cut loose Cozart twice in the opening period to take a 4-2 lead into the first break. Cozart chose down and escaped in the second period, while Parks did the same in the third to make it 5-3. Parks 1:52 riding time advantage made the final 6-3.

 

157: No. 9 Albert White (OSU) MD Lucas Swalla (ISU); 13-5

Senior Albert White picked up Oklahoma StateÂ’s fourth bonus-point win of the night with his major decision over Lucas Swalla. White, wrestling in his first dual since January, took a 2-1 lead into the second period after recording a takedown in the first followed by a Swalla escape. White then earned a quick reversal to open the second and built his riding time advantage to more than two minutes before cutting Swalla loose. Another White takedown made it 6-2 entering the final period. Swalla chose down to start the third and alternated escapes and takedowns with White until White held a 12-5 advantage. White rode out Swalla and earned the 2:40 riding time advantage point to pick up the 13-5 major decision.

 

165: No. 7 Andrew Sorenson (ISU) dec. No. 13 Dallas Bailey (OSU); 5-1

In one of the most anticipated matches of the night, No. 7 Andrew Sorenson battled No. 13 Dallas Bailey for a 5-1 decision, although the match remained close through its majority. After a scoreless first period and each wrestler splitting escapes to open the second and third periods, the score was tied at 1-1 with less than a minute and a half remaining. Bailey recorded his second stalling warning to surrender the penalty point to Sorenson and give him a 2-1 lead. Sorenson earned the match’s only takedown with 49 seconds remaining and rode Bailey out of the period to earn a 1:11 riding time advantage and a 5-1 decision. The wrestlers had split their only previous meetings, giving Sorenson a 2-1 advantage after tonight.

 

174: No. 8 Chris Spangler (ISU) dec. Chris McNeil (OSU); 9-5

Senior Chris McNeil had one of the toughest matchups of the night for the Cowboys as he squared off against eighth-ranked Chris Spangler. Spangler lead 4-1 after the first with a pair of takedowns, but McNeil picked up a quick escape in the second to cut it to 4-2. Spangler answered with two more takedowns in the period to go up 8-3. McNeil again cut the lead to two with his only takedown of the match in the third, but Spangler escaped and held on for a 9-5 decision as McNeil's upset bid fell short in his first loss of the season.

 

184: No. 9 Chris Perry (OSU) dec. No. 12 Boaz Beard (ISU); 9-2

The final match of the night was another anticipated one as it pit No. 9 Chris Perry against No. 12 Boaz Beard. Perry picked up a takedown with 27 seconds left in the opening period to take a 2-0 lead into the second. He built his advantage to 5-0 after escaping from and taking down Beard in the second. Perry added a third takedown to open the third and score his seventh point before Beard scored his first. Beard finally got on the board with 22 seconds remaining with a reversal. Bailey quickly escaped, however, and his 1:18 riding time advantage gave him a 9-2 decision.
