Colorado Rivalry- Ponderosa vs Broomfield

After a very disappointing Clash Tournament for both Broomfield and Ponderosa, the two Colorado state powers met this past Wednesday night for a rematch. The match was held at Broomfield High School in front of 1000 people. Ponderosa is the defending 8 time straight 5A state champions and Broomfield is the defending 2 time straight 4A state champions. When the two teams met in Minnesota last week both teams were 0-5 in their pool. The met the last match of the tournament with Ponderosa taking a very convincing 40-25 victory. But like the weather in Colorado, things can change in a matter of hours and days.  Broomfield came out with a strong showing and was able to pull off the victory 37-30 Wednesday night.

The match started with the 112 pound Jon Stelling-Broomfield pinning J.T. Mason in 34 seconds.

119- Gavin Gomez-Broomfield - received a forfeit

125- An undefeated freshman Phil Downing - Broomfield dec. #2 ranked Sam Jones 6-3

130- #1 ranked Courtland Hacker- Broomfield avenged his lost when he pinned Casey Schiedt  in 3:50.  Courtland had been beaten by Casey at the Clash last week.

With Broomfield leading 21-0, Freshman Dillon Gable of Ponderosa major dec Mike Fargoso 12-1 at 135 pounds.

140- Nick Babcock-Broomfield avenged a lost to Tory Williams 8-2. Tory had beaten Nick at the Clash last week.

From 145-171 Ponderosa won four matches in a row to tighten the score.

145- John Lewis Ponderosa pinned Warren Eckman 1:17.

152- Thad Gallegos Ponderosa tech falled Cody Sullivan 20-3.

160- Connor Crane Ponderosa major decision Nathan Aragon 14-0.

171- Virginia Tech recruit Austin Gable Ponderosa pinned D.J. Zissimos .49 seconds.

But Broomfield held onto win 3 of the last 4 matches.

189- Connor King Broomfield major decision Corry Williams 14-5.

215- Connor Eakes Broomfield dec. Mack Lennon 2-0.

285- John Eller Ponderosa pinned Colin Eakes 1:14.

With Broomfield leading 31-30 going into the final match Broomfield s 103 pounder Dylan Alvarez pinned David Shaull in .30 seconds to give Broomfield the 37-30 victory.

This is what high school athletics is all about.  Two great teams, in front of a packed gym wrestling head to head with the victory coming down to the last match.  Great job to both teams.

I was able to interview the Coach Joe Pereira-Broomfield, Coach Corey McNellis-Ponderosa and Tim Ottmann Ponderosa's athletic director and former wrestling coach before the match. If I can figure out how to download from my camera to the computer I will put those on Flo Wrestling as well.  (Don t hold your breath)!

Up next for the Colorado series will be the long time rivalry between Wray, Colorado and Burlington,  Colorado.  These are two small schools both powerhouse teams on the Eastern plains of Colorado.
