UFC 121- Brock (Minn) vs Cain (ASU)

UFC 121 is a big one for the wrestling community as 2 of our former high level NCAA wrestlers will be squaring off in the main event with the UFC heavyweight world chamionship on the line. 2000 NCAA champion Brock Lesnar from the University of Minnesota will be defending his UFC title against 2x all-american Cain Velasquez from Arizona State University. Both fighters are still pretty "new" to the sport as neither one has even 10 fights yet. Brock stands at 5-1 having avenged his only loss, while Cain is unbeaten at 8-0.

After tomorrow night Cain Velasquez will remain unbeaten and will be crowned the new UFC heavyweight champion of the world and here is why: Shane Carwin exposed a hole in Brock Lesnar's game and that was his stand up, his boxing skills. Carwin nearly finished Lesnar in the first round of their UFC title bout on July 3, but Brock was able to weather the storm and won the fight in the second round over an exhausted Carwin. Shane Carwin had never had a fight go past the first round in his entire career. Cain Velasquez has proven that he has a big gas tank and car go hard all day long.

Lesnar will weigh in right around the 265lb limit while Velasquez will likely show up somewhere around 240, giving the champ a significant size advantage. It seems inevitable that Brock will likely try to get a takedown because he is the inferior striker, but I believe that a smaller and quicker Cain will use footwork with his boxing and top level wrestling skills to avoid the takedown. Fighting, like wrestling, is as much about being tough as it is about being smart.

This title fight is scheduled for five 5 minute rounds but I don't see it going past three, I'm taking Cain Velasquez by stoppage.
