Here are four Russian wrestlers to watch at the Senior World Championships.
Abdulrashid Sadulaev, 97 kg
Few wrestlers enter a major international tournament with a resume like Abdulrashid Sadulaev's.
The two-time Olympic gold medalist and six-time world champion has established himself as one of the most accomplished freestyle wrestlers of his generation.
Known as "The Russian Tank," Sadulaev combines powerful attacks with exceptional control and the ability to dictate the pace of a match. His experience in high-pressure situations makes him a threat whenever he takes the mat.
The 97 kg division is filled with elite competition, including American Kyle Snyder and Bahrain's Akhmed Tazhudinov. Any matchup involving Sadulaev and one of the division's leading contenders could be among the tournament's biggest highlights.
With his championship background and technical ability, Sadulaev is one of the most compelling wrestlers to follow in Astana.
Zavur Uguev, 61 kg
Zavur Uguev has already demonstrated that he can deliver on wrestling's biggest stages.
The two-time world champion won titles in 2018 and 2019 before capturing Olympic gold at the Tokyo Games in 2021.
Uguev's success has been built on speed, precision and the ability to create scoring opportunities against elite opponents. His experience competing for world and Olympic titles gives him a significant advantage when matches become tight.
The 61 kg weight class demands quick reactions and constant movement, making Uguev's technical style particularly effective. His ability to turn small openings into scoring sequences makes him a dangerous opponent for anyone in the bracket.
After establishing himself among the world's top lightweights, Uguev will be one of Russia's most experienced competitors to watch.
Abasgadzhi Magomedov, 65 kg
Abasgadzhi Magomedov is another Russian wrestler with international championship credentials.
He won a world title at 61 kg in 2021 and has continued to compete at a high level as he moves through the freestyle ranks.
His transition to 65 kg presents a new challenge. The division features a deep field of accomplished wrestlers, with matches often decided by positioning, pace and the ability to capitalize on limited scoring opportunities.
Magomedov's experience at the world level gives him a foundation for the challenge. His technical skills and ability to compete against elite opposition make him a wrestler worth watching as he pursues another major international title.
A strong performance would further establish Magomedov as a contender in one of freestyle wrestling's most competitive divisions.
Ibragim Kadiev, 86 kg
Ibragim Kadiev is one of the younger Russian wrestlers looking to make a major impression on the senior international stage.
Kadiev captured the European championship in 2026 at 86 kg and has also won two U20 world titles. He claimed Russian national championships from 2024 through 2026, building an impressive record against domestic competition.
His European title provides a significant indicator of his potential against senior-level opponents. The world championships, however, will bring another level of difficulty, with established stars and international medalists competing for the same prize.
The 86 kg division is traditionally one of freestyle wrestling's most competitive weight classes. Kadiev's ability to translate his recent success into a strong performance against the world's best will be a key storyline to follow.
