• 61 kg Preview & Predictions - 2026 Senior World Wrestling Championships

For fans who want to see how Penn State's wrestling talent stacks up beyond the college ranks, the tournament offers a compelling week of international competition.

Marcus Blaze Gets Another Chance To Prove He's A World-Class Contender

At 61 kg, Blaze gives Penn State fans one of the most intriguing storylines of the tournament.

The Nittany Lion earned All-America honors during his freshman season in 2025-26 and secured his place on the senior world team by defeating Jax Forrest in the Final X series. Blaze also won a U17 world title in 2023 and a U20 world bronze medal in 2024, establishing himself as one of the country's most accomplished young wrestlers.

Now, he will face a senior international field featuring experienced world medalists and champions. The challenge is a significant step up from college wrestling, but it also gives fans a chance to see how Blaze's aggressive style translates against elite international competition.

His performance in Astana could provide an early indication of how much more he can accomplish as he continues developing at Penn State.

Zain Retherford And Levi Haines Are Chasing World Titles

Penn State's international success extends well beyond its current lineup.

Retherford, a three-time NCAA champion and two-time Dan Hodge Trophy winner, will compete at 70 kg. He captured a world championship in 2023 and has established himself as one of the most accomplished wrestlers to come through the Nittany Lions' program.

Haines, meanwhile, will compete at 79 kg after winning his second NCAA championship in 2026. The former Nittany Lion also earned a silver medal at the 2025 Senior World Championships and won the 2025 U23 world title.

Haines now has an opportunity to take another step toward becoming a senior world champion. His return to the international stage is particularly compelling for Penn State fans who watched his development into one of the nation's most dominant college wrestlers.

Both men will face a different kind of challenge in Astana. International freestyle rewards adaptability, tactical awareness and the ability to create scoring opportunities against opponents who may have vastly different styles from the wrestlers they faced in college.

Kyle Dake And Kyle Snyder Bring Championship Experience

The Nittany Lion Wrestling Club connection also gives Penn State fans two very accomplished wrestlers in the world.

Dake will represent the United States at 86 kg. A four-time NCAA champion at Cornell, he has also won a multiple senior world titles at 74 and 79 kg and earned Olympic bronze medals in 2021 and 2024. He secured his spot on the 2026 U.S. team by defeating Zahid Valencia in their best-of-three Final X series.

Snyder will compete at 97 kg. The former Ohio State star won Olympic gold in 2016 and is a three-time NCAA champion. He has accumulated multiple world titles and medals throughout his career and qualified for his 12th consecutive world or Olympic team in 2026.

Although neither wrestler competed collegiately for Penn State, both are affiliated with the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club. Their performances offer a look at the international standard that the club's athletes train to reach.

Roman Bravo-Young Adds An International Storyline

Bravo-Young gives Penn State fans another familiar name to follow, this time representing Mexico.

The former Nittany Lion, who won two NCAA championships at Penn State, will compete at 57 kg. His international career offers a different perspective on how an accomplished college wrestler can pursue opportunities beyond the U.S. national team.

Bravo-Young's presence also broadens the Penn State connection beyond the American lineup. While Blaze, Retherford, Haines, Dake and Snyder represent the United States, Bravo-Young will be competing for Mexico.

His matches will be worth watching as he tests himself against an international field that includes established world-level competitors.

The Tournament Offers A Preview Of Penn State's Wrestling Culture

Penn State's success is not limited to the NCAA tournament. The Nittany Lion Wrestling Club provides an environment where current athletes and elite senior wrestlers train alongside one another, creating daily opportunities to learn from world and Olympic champions.

The Senior World Championships put that training to the test.

Penn State fans can watch Blaze gain experience against senior competition, Haines pursue his first senior world title, Retherford attempt to add to his international resume and Dake and Snyder chase more medals. Bravo-Young's appearance for Mexico adds another former Nittany Lion to the mix.

The tournament also arrives just before Penn State begins its 2026-27 college season, giving fans an international showcase before the Nittany Lions return to folkstyle competition.

Penn State is scheduled to open its season against Bloomsburg on Nov. 12 at Rec Hall.
