Wrestling has long served as a foundation for success in mixed martial arts, and LFA 244 will feature two fighters who built impressive resumes on the mat before turning their attention to the cage.
Jake Woodley and Joziah Fry are scheduled to compete Friday, Oct. 23, at LFA 244 in Mashantucket, Connecticut. Woodley will challenge Zayne Havener for the vacant LFA middleweight championship in the main event, while Fry will face Yve Nelson in a flyweight bout.

Both fighters bring accomplished wrestling backgrounds into their MMA careers. Woodley was an NCAA Division I All-American at Oklahoma, while Fry won three consecutive NCAA Division III national championships at Johnson & Wales (RI).
Their appearances give wrestling fans another opportunity to follow athletes who have transitioned from collegiate competition to professional MMA.
Jake Woodley Was An NCAA All-American At Oklahoma
Before establishing himself as an LFA middleweight contender, Woodley competed against some of the nation's top collegiate wrestlers at the University of Oklahoma.
Woodley became an NCAA Division I All-American in 2021 at 197 lbs and qualified for the NCAA Championships four times.
He also made history during his All-American run, becoming the lowest-seeded wrestler to reach the NCAA semifinals at the time after entering the tournament as the 26th seed.
His wrestling career began in Pennsylvania, where he won two state championships at North Allegheny High School before joining the Sooners.
Joziah Fry Won Three NCAA Division III Championships
Fry arrives at LFA 244 with a very accomplished recent wrestling career in NCAA Division III.
While competing at Johnson & Wales, Fry won three consecutive national championships at 125 lbs. He completed his senior season in 2024-25 with an undefeated 43-0 record, finishing his collegiate career among the division's most dominant wrestlers.
Fry's success was built on the type of consistent offense that can translate well to MMA. His collegiate career included 165 takedowns during his undefeated senior season, demonstrating his ability to create opportunities and maintain pressure against opponents.
How Wrestling Could Shape Their LFA 244 Bouts
Woodley and Fry enter LFA 244 at different stages of their MMA careers, but their wrestling backgrounds offer a common thread.
For Woodley, the challenge is to turn his collegiate experience into another championship performance against Havener. His ability to control positions, defend takedowns and dictate where exchanges take place could play an important role in the middleweight title fight.
Fry, meanwhile, is continuing to develop as a professional fighter after an exceptional collegiate career. His wrestling credentials provide a strong foundation, but his bout against Nelson will also test his ability to combine grappling with the striking and submission skills required in MMA.
Wrestling success does not guarantee success in the cage. However, balance, leverage, hand fighting and positional awareness can give athletes valuable tools as they develop in the sport.
When Is LFA 244?
