The 57 kg men's freestyle division will feature an Olympic medalist, a returning world champion and several international contenders with legitimate title ambitions at the 2026 Senior World Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan.
American Spencer Lee is looking to rebound from a disappointing performance at the 2025 World Championships, while North Korea's Chongsong Han returns to defend the title he won last year. - 57 kg Preview & Predictions - 2026 Senior World Wrestling Championships
With five legitimate title contenders and several other wrestlers capable of disrupting the bracket, 57 kg is one of the most intriguing weight classes.
Here are three reasons why 57 kg is a must-watch weight class at the 2026 Senior World Championships.
1. Spencer Lee Is Chasing His First Senior World Title
Spencer Lee enters the 2026 Senior World Championships looking to turn his recent momentum into a world title. The American won silver at the 2024 Paris Olympics but struggled at the 2025 World Championships, losing to Arsen Harutyunyan by technical superiority in the quarterfinals and failing to place.
Lee has responded with a strong run of results in 2026. He defeated several notable international and domestic opponents throughout the year, including Roman Bravo-Young, before facing Luke Lilledahl in the U.S. Open final. Lilledahl won that match 5-4, but Lee bounced back at Final X to secure the United States' spot at the Senior World Championships.
Lee won the first match of the Final X series 7-1 and ultimately won the best-of-three series to earn his place on Team USA.
Lee's leg attacks and par terre offense make him one of the most dangerous wrestlers in the division. His ability to score from the top position can quickly turn close matches into technical falls, and his performance at Final X showed he can battle back under pressure.
Lee now has another opportunity to establish himself as a world champion. If he can reproduce his best wrestling in Astana, he will be a serious threat to win gold at 57 kg.
2. Chongsong Han Returns To Defend His World Title
North Korea's Chongsong Han enters the tournament as the reigning world champion after pulling off one of the biggest surprises at the 2025 Senior World Championships.
Han entered last year's tournament unseeded but navigated a difficult bracket to win gold. He defeated Darian Cruz, Guesseppe Rea, Bravo-Young, Harutyunyan and Kyrgyzstan's Bekzat Almaz Uulu on his way to the championship. Han capped his run with a 12-9 victory over Almaz Uulu in the final.
Han's defensive fundamentals, counterattacks and par terre offense helped him get through a series of difficult matchups. However, he has shown that he can be beaten since his world title run, including a technical fall loss to Mongolia's Munkh Erdene Batkhuyag at the Yarygin tournament and a 6-6 decision loss to Musa Mekhtikhanov in the Ulaanbaatar Open final.
With more footage available for opponents to study, Han will face a different challenge in 2026. The division's top contenders know what he can do, and several will be looking for another opportunity to beat the reigning champion.
Han has already proven he can win a world title against elite competition. Now, he must show he can do it again.
3. Olympic Medalists and International World Medalists Make This a Deep Field
Lee and Han headline the division, but the 57 kg field includes several other wrestlers with the credentials to challenge for gold.
Bravo-Young is another contender after finishing fifth at the 2025 World Championships. The Mexican wrestler has continued to show his offensive ability, including a dominant performance at the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games, where he won five matches by technical fall and defeated Cruz 11-0 in the final.
The medal contenders extend beyond those established names. Iran's Milad Valizadeh won the 2026 Asian Championships at 57 kg, defeating Batkhuyag in the final. Batkhuyag, meanwhile, has already beaten Han and owns a 2025 World Championships victory over Azamat Tuskaev. Azerbaijan's Islam Bazarganov won the 2026 European Championships at 57 kg, while Kyrgyzstan's Almaz Uulu returns after winning silver at the 2025 World Championships.
That mix of Olympic medalists, returning world medalists and wrestlers with recent international titles makes the division especially difficult to predict. A challenging draw could produce medal-level matchups well before the semifinals.
With Lee chasing his first Senior World title, Han attempting to defend his championship and a deep group of international contenders looking to reach the podium, 57 kg has plenty of compelling storylines heading into the 2026 Senior World Championships.
