- 2026 U23 World Championships Preview & Predictions
Christian Pyles, Jon Kozak and JD Rader evaluated the Big Ten from top to bottom, breaking down under-the-radar teams, freshmen and breakout candidates, must-watch duals and individual matchups before making their conference championship predictions.
Here is a look at the biggest topics from Episode 1,269 of FRL.
FRL Breaks Down The 2026-27 Big Ten Wrestling Season
The crew opened its Big Ten preview by identifying teams that could outperform expectations this season.
Pyles highlighted Rutgers, pointing to a deep lineup that features Anthony Knox, Brett Unger, Andrew Barbosa, Remy Cotton, Daniel Herrera and others.
"I think Rutgers is deep top-to-bottom and should have a guy at every weight who can qualify for the NCAA tournament, win matches, and some place," Pyles said.
Pyles also pointed to the program's overall talent level, calling it "one of Coach Goodale's most talented teams since the Suriano/Ashnault/Richie Lewis era."
Kozak selected Indiana as another team capable of surprising opponents because of its depth and offseason additions.
Rader added Minnesota and Michigan to the conversation. Minnesota brings back experienced wrestlers who could contend near the top of their weight classes, while Michigan enters the season with a young lineup filled with highly regarded recruits and significant upside.
"Michigan is a fun team this year," Kozak said.
The hosts also identified several potential breakout wrestlers. Michigan's Daniel Zepeda, Iowa's Carter Schubert and Minnesota's Charlie Millard were among the names discussed, while Rutgers' Alex Nini also received attention as an under-the-radar wrestler to watch.

Anthony Knox Leads Big Ten Freshmen To Watch
Rutgers freshman Anthony Knox was one of the biggest names discussed among the conference's newcomers.
The crew viewed Knox as one of the Big Ten's top freshman candidates entering the year, while Iowa's Leo DeLuca and Michigan's Kellen Wolbert and Nico Sahakian were among the other freshmen discussed as wrestlers with the potential to make an early impact.
Nebraska-Iowa Headlines Must-Watch Big Ten Duals
The panel highlighted several dual meets worth watching during the upcoming season, with Nebraska vs Iowa emerging as one of the biggest.
Pyles called Nebraska-Iowa the premier Big Ten dual of the season because of where the programs are expected to sit in the conference race and the number of competitive individual matchups throughout the lineups.
"It's the number two versus number three team in the Big Tens," Pyles said. "It's really late in the year, so it feels like all the lineups are going to be pretty well formed."
Nebraska vs Ohio State and Iowa vs Ohio State were also discussed as duals that could help determine the teams immediately behind Penn State.
Other duals singled out included Ohio State vs Michigan, Rutgers vs Nebraska, Minnesota vs Michigan, Minnesota vs Rutgers and the Indiana-Purdue rivalry.
Ohio State-Michigan was singled out as another particularly intriguing matchup, with Pyles expecting the rivalry to deliver a competitive dual.
"I think Ohio State, Michigan, I think is going to be absolutely electric this year," Pyles said. "I think this is going to be a great, great dual meet."
Among individual matches, Mitchell Mesenbrink vs Christopher Minto was one of the most anticipated potential showdowns. Pyles specifically wanted to see whether Minto could make the matchup competitive.
"I'm most interested to see if Minto can make that competitive," Pyles said.
The crew also discussed Ben Davino vs Marcus Blaze, Anthony Knox vs Luke Lilledahl and the possibility of seeing Masanosuke Ono against several of the conference's top wrestlers.
Penn State Picked To Win Another Big Ten Championship
There was little disagreement when it came to the projected Big Ten team champion.
All three hosts selected Penn State to win the conference championship, while Iowa, Nebraska and Ohio State were discussed as the leading contenders in the race behind the Nittany Lions.
Mitchell Mesenbrink was also the consensus favorite for Big Ten Wrestler of the Year. The hosts discussed several questions that could shape the conference season, including Iowa's health, Ryan Crookham's title potential, Knox's freshman season and how Penn State ultimately sets its lineup.
Iowa's health was one of the biggest questions raised during the preview.
" Just how healthy does Iowa stay?" Pyles asked.
The panel also went weight by weight with Big Ten finals predictions, discussing potential champions.
The hosts also made several bold predictions. Rader boldly proclaimed that someone outside of Nick Feldman, Ben Kueter, the Mirasola twins and Cade Ziola would win the Big Ten heavyweight title. Kozak predicted Nick Bouzakis would win at 141 lbs, while Pyles went even further by predicting Penn State could put all 10 wrestlers into the Big Ten finals.
Amit Elor Out Of U23 World Championships
The crew also reacted to the news that Amit Elor will not compete at the U23 World Championships.
The hosts said Elor had been dealing with an illness that resulted in inflammation involving her heart. They also questioned whether the issue could affect her participation at the upcoming Senior World Championships, though no announcement had been made.
The full U23 World Championships preview was pushed to the next episode, with the crew planning to dive deeper into the tournament before competition begins.
FRL Returns Monday
The U23 World Championships take center stage Monday, Oct. 12 as the FRL crew returns with a full tournament preview, breaking down the wrestlers, matchups and storylines to watch.
