Before Bassett takes the mat, here are five things to know about the incoming Virginia Tech freshman.
He's Beginning His Freshman Season At Virginia Tech
Bassett enters the 2026-27 season as one of the most popular freshmen in college wrestling.
After a decorated high school career, Bassett is set to begin his collegiate career at Virginia Tech. He enters the season ranked No. 2 at 141 lbs and is expected to make an immediate impact for the Hokies.
His arrival adds another highly touted wrestler to a Virginia Tech program that has consistently competed among the nation's top teams.
He's Already A Multiple-Time World Champion
Bassett's success extends far beyond high school wrestling.
He won a U17 World title for Team USA in 2019, captured a bronze medal at the 2024 U20 World Championships and claimed a U20 World championship this past month. His international success has played a major role in his rise to national prominence and demonstrated his ability to compete against elite opponents from around the globe.
He Originally Committed to Iowa
One of the biggest recruiting stories in recent wrestling history involved Bassett's college decision.
Bassett initially committed to Iowa before later flipping his commitment to Virginia Tech. The move became one of the most discussed recruiting developments in the sport and gave the Hokies one of the nation's most sought-after prospects.
His commitment further strengthened a Virginia Tech program that continues to contend for trophies at the NCAA Championships.
He's Known For His High-Scoring Style
Few wrestlers are more entertaining to watch than Bassett.
Throughout his career, he has built a reputation for generating offense in bunches and producing momentum-changing scoring sequences. Whether competing in folkstyle or freestyle, Bassett consistently pushes the pace and looks to create action.
That offensive machine-gun mindset has made him one of the most entertaining wrestlers to watch and a fan favorite at major events.
He's Taking On Real Woods In A Final X Special Wrestle-Off
Few events have generated as much hype as the best-of-three series featuring Bassett against returning World bronze medalist Real Woods on Friday, Sept. 25 at 6 p.m. ET.
The matchup will provide another opportunity for Bassett to test himself against elite opposition as he continues preparing for the next stage of his career.
What's Next For Bo Bassett?
Despite already compiling a resume that includes world titles, national rankings and a commitment to Virginia Tech, Bassett's wrestling journey is still in its early stages.
With major events such as Final X and future international competitions on the horizon, Bassett remains one of the most compelling young wrestlers in the country and one of the sport's brightest rising stars.
