How They Reached Final X
Maroulis reached Final X by winning a gold medal at the 2025 World Championships.
Martinez reached Final X by winning the 2026 US Open. She defeated Rose Kaplan (Fall 1:58), Anna DiCugno (Fall :55), Amani Jones (9-1), and Alex Hedrick (6-4).
What Should You Expect?
If history has its say, you can expect domination by Maroulis. She is the greatest women’s freestyle wrestler in U.S. history, with four falls over Martinez. Her offensive arsenal is full, and at 34, she is wrestling like her younger self.
For Martinez, this is less about winning and more about making progress. She looks better than ever and is reaching her competitive prime. The Riverside, Illinois, native is a fighter who never gives an inch.
North Central is a national powerhouse in part because of Martinez’s influence. That’s a testament to her extreme discipline and dedication. She does everything right, and it will take that and more to knock off Maroulis once, let alone twice.
Study the second match of last year’s Final X. Martinez scored on a double in the second off a restart, and that’s part of the blueprint for her to win. Wrestling junkies should study the final sequence.
Maroulis attempted a slide-by, Martinez countered and looked like she was about to get a takedown, Martinez got slightly out of position, and Maroulis took advantage and secured a fall. Or, if you’re a folkstyle aficionado, she hit a Gizoni.
There’s a reason Maroulis is still the queen of women’s wrestling.
